Topic: SuprNova

Suprnova.org - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suprnova did not host any of the shared files, nor did it operate any BitTorrent trackers for long.
Suprnova would connect to the tracker periodically to obtain statistics for display on its web pages, so visitors could determine how popular a file was, and how likely it was that they could obtain a complete copy of it.
Later, Sloncek revealed on Suprnova's IRC channel that he and the other administrators were not willing to continue fighting the legal warnings which they had received.

The BitTorrent P2P file-sharing system | The Register
The second is the large variation due to failures of either the mirroring system across the Suprnova mirrors, of the mirrors themselves, of the.torrent servers, or of the trackers.
Only half of the Suprnova mirrors had an average uptime of over 2.1 days, which is a good indication of their (un)availability.
The statistics from Suprnova were fetched by our HTML script every hour, and are in agreement with the total tracker results to such an extent that the lines overlap almost completely.

The former is the successor to Suprnova, one of the BitTorrent sites targetted and ultimately closed down by the movie industry in its all-out war against p2p and p2p file sharing.
Since the majority of the peer-to-peer community dislikes spyware, and distrust the people who distribute it, the Suprnova staff should not be surprised when their users turn against them.

 SuprNova - Back With A Bang? - P2P Core
As love turned to hate, SuprNova was abandoned by the large majority of BT users, instead new sites such as Snarf-It gave new hope to the lost individuals, whilst an explosion of smaller BitTorrent sites soon occurred.
Hostility towards SuprNova was to be expected, with old wounds reopened it will not be an easy task to convince the naysayers that SuprNova can truly benefit file sharers.
But whether you love it or loathe it, SuprNova has proved to be influential in the past and it can be so again, if it's given the chance.

OSNN - Suprnova and TorrentBits go dark
With previous reports estimating BitTorrent to account for 35% of all internet traffic, it was only a matter of time before site's hosting torrents for copyrighted material (even though disclaimed against the illegal use of said torrents) would attract attention from law enforcement and copyright holders.
Over the recent months, suprnova had been receiving upwards of three and a half million hits per day (3,500,000), which is more than even slashdot itself averages (estimated 3m/day) showing the site was indeed, extremely popular.
I'm holding out to see how Suprnova's Exeem application turns out, if it delivers everything it promises, it should be a damned fine app.

Of course that happened after the season was well under way, which has led to a secondary addiction to BitTorrent sharing so that I could catch the episodes I’d missed.
Yesterday, SuprNova shut things down — seemingly for good — which shut down access to the site where I had been getting the torrent links for the “Lost” episodes I had missed.

CDFreaks.com | news| mininova takes over where bittorrent site suprnova left off
DamnedIfIknow used our news submit to let us know that since the original shutdown of Napster, the music and movie industry are effectively playing a long game of Whac-A-Mole, shutting down one big site after another as new ones pop up.
Also, due to the nature of how BitTorrent works, it is much more difficult for the music and movie industries to try testing files to see which are copyright without them also breaching copyright by sharing out the content as it downloads.
It looks like BitTorrent technology is here to stay for a long time, particularly as the original author is working with the movie industry to put its software to practical legal use.

Napster managed to essentially escape the wrath of the RIAA legally, but was crushed by the legal bills that accompanied their defense.
There's no real difference between the Napster case and any number of others here, as those technologies were also just providing "links" to the files.
Still, you can expect sites like Suprnova to move operations to locations that won't prosecute them - or you can expect sites like Suprnova to disappear completely.
