The Surf has a fabulous music history from the big bands of the 30's and 40's, to big name rock artists of the 50's through the 90's, the Surf has had them all.
The original Surf was built as a wooden frame structure and prospered as one of the most popular ballrooms in the Upper Midwest until an untimely fire caused her demise in 1947.
The community of Clear Lake and dancers throughout the Midwest got behind the ownership of the Surf and it was rebuilt at its current location in 1948.

While we were getting shruggs from drivers saying that there's "no vacancy", a fellow neighbor told us that we could catch a ride on his boat to get to the Surf Ballroom, just give him a half-hour.
We ended up a block from the Surf Ballroom, a shrine to Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, as well as photos from other performers who've played in the ballroom before.
We journeyed into the main ballroom where Vic Ferrari and his band was playing various different songs from different fields (oldies, country, 80's, rock, classic rock, etc.) This is the first time we had all 12 members meet and dance the night away.

This year for the first time in 9 years we opted NOT to attend the Buddy Holly Weekend (or whatever they're calling it now) at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Keep in mind that we went to this more to enjoy ourselves rather than to document the event like I do when we go to the Surf, so I wasn't paying as much attention to the details and instead could actually be found on the dance floor.
The Kato Ballroom was considerably smaller than the Surf but I think very well kept up and friendly.

And there are cottages for rent at the lake, one of which is North Shore House, which has an old dock for its deck and the stern of an old sailboat as a coffee table.
There are many reasons to visit Clear Lake, but none so compelling as the Surf Ballroom on February 3, since it's a way to know for sure that the music didn't die.
