I would define surface or free-style embroidery as stitching with thread on a fabric ground using the more traditional stitches; such as, satin, stem, chain, blanket, leaf, etc.
I love the Jacobean/crewel style of embroidery so I designed this pattern and used various trellis and fill-in stitches with his name stitched in the open areas.

I found "The Art of Brazilian Embroidery" disappointing because so much of it was a duplication of the first book and I didn't feel that the original material warranted the price.
Embroidery is color (unless your are doing white/red/flwork) and needs colored photos if you want to produce an effective book.
I had bought one of her designs not knowing what Brazilian embroidery was, I stitched it using cotton thread.
