A tongue piercing is a piercing, placed in the center of the tongue to avoid hitting a nerve, and to avoid damaging the "webbing", the part under the tongue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth.
Surface piercings are any body piercings that take place on the surface of the body through areas which are not particularly concave or convex, where the piercing canal transverses a surface flap of skin, rather than running completely through a piece of body tissue from one side to another.
Sometimes surface piercings are difficult to heal, because, as the body rejects the body jewellery as a foreign object, the jewellery is pushed to the surface, causing the piercing to grow out.

Surface Piercing Rejection - BME Encyclopedia
Surface piercings will only fully heal when it is easier for your body than pushing the jewelry out.
If you are going to use any technique other than surface bars, or want to do a surface piercing in a location not suited to surface bars, this method is the most likely to work, but still less reliable than using surface bars.
Surface bars - Surface bars are generally thought to be the single best -- and perhaps only -- acceptable solution for most surface piercings.

They are piercings that enter the skin, carry along the dermal layers for a short distance and exit through the same area of skin.
Surface piercings are prone to 'growing out' or migration.
A surface piercing will usually be initially fitted with a PTFE (implantable thermoplastic polymer) staple as we find that the flexibility of this material helps reduce the risks of the piercing growing out quickly.

Best shape for surface piercing foil - Boat Design Forums
A surface piercing foil regulates lift by changing the immersed area of the foil.
Depending on how the foil is operated, the surface piercing foil has the potential to have lower drag than the fully submerged foil at off-design conditions.
The surface piercing foil is much more dependent on proper trim to optimize its performance, and it may benefit from active height control as well.

This is a piercing that we did more often for people at one time, before we could be sure beyond reasonable doubt that the results were not representative of the caliber of work we are capable of in nearly every case.
When you pierce through a flat area of skin such as on the neck to wear jewelry, the complications are similar to the application of sutures or surgical staples assuming the appropriate level of safety precautions are taken.
There are a few people who happily wear their scars, and others who may even have a bit of tissue left in which to hold a piece of jewelry, but not enough to suggest that this type of decoration is at all stable enough with current methods and technology.

Surface propellers virtually eliminate drag from all of these sources, as the only surfaces to contact the water are the propeller blades and a skeg or rudder.
Surface propellers are usually associated with the stainless steel "cleaver" style common to race boat applications.
Surface propellers have long been accepted for racing applications, where minimizing appendage drag and cavitation are the major motivations.

When a hull fitted with surface drives and surface-piercing propellers is up on plane, the entire drive unit is out of the water, with only the lower half of the propeller blades and a small protective skeg extending into the water.

 Surface Bar - BME Encyclopedia
While Surface Piercing is a diverse art, and different piercings do need different solutions, if a generalization is to be made, is it generally agreed upon that surface bars are the best available solution to the surface piercing problem.
First, a surface bar is made of a rigid material, generally titanium or stainless steel.
There is a newer incarnation of the surface bar without a proper name (perhaps appropriately "surface wire"); a surface bar made of flat wire stock instead of round stock, thereby bringing its volume to an utter minimum, while maintaining surface area.
