Surface supplied diving - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Surface supplied diving refers to divers using equipment supplied with breathing gas using an umbilical cord from the surface, often from a diving support vessel but possibly, indirectly via a diving bell.
Surface supplied diving equipment and techniques are mainly used in professional diving or military diving due to the increased cost and complexity of buying and operating the equipment.
Surface supplied diving is also generally considered more dangerous than Scuba diving, since damage or tearing of the umbilical oxygen cord while a diver is submerged almost always results in death by drowning.

The diving boards that they use are very high up, not bouncey and made of concrete so that when the divers go to dive they are not jiggling all over the place.

A test dive of the system was conducted by staff allowing the students to perform as members of a diving side under instruction prior to the beginning of the next days student diving projects.
The first training dive was conducted just outside the Marine Lab channel allowing a shallow depth, sand bottom, and some amount of visibility allowing a staff safety diver to watch and critique the students on the performance of hands on emergency procedures.
Diving operations were concluded Monday afternoon, students performed post dive and post mission maintenance on the equipment and met in the classroom again for an after course discussion and course critique session.

Diving - SmartyBrain Encyclopedia and Dictionary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Diving has several meanings: plunging deliberately or acrobatically into water, swimming while under water, and using underwater breathing apparatus (such as when scuba diving or surface supplied diving).
Dives are performed either from springboards — long, flexible planks that bend as the divers repeatedly jump on the end of the board to gain height and speed before diving — or from rigid platforms of greater height.
Divers are judged on whether they completed all aspects of the dive, the conformance of their body to the requirements of the nominated dive, and the amount of splash created by their entry to the water (less being better).

 US Navy Dive Manual
The origins of diving are firmly rooted in man's need and desire to engage in maritime commerce, to conduct salvage and military operations, and to expand the frontiers of knowledge through exploration, research, and development.
In 1937, at the Experimental Diving Unit research facility, a diver wearing a deep-sea diving dress with a helium-oxygen breathing supply was compressed in a chamber to a simulated depth of 500 feet.
At the surface, this percentage of oxygen would not be sufficient to sustain life; at 100 feet, however, the oxygen partial pressure would be the equivalent of 16 percent oxygen at the surface.
