	Surfer Girl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Surfer Girl was the third album officially released by The Beach Boys and their second longplayer in 1963.
		An interesting note: "South Bay Surfer" is co-credited to Al Jardine, who had recently rejoined The Beach Boys in the summer of 1963 to replace Brian on the road (which he was already tiring of).
		Surfer Girl (Capitol (S)T 1981) is now paired on CD with Shut Down Volume 2, with bonus tracks from that period.

		"Surfer Girl" the song definitely was sung by the Beach Boys.
		However, parts of SURFER GIRL the album apparently were sung by Brian and his friends.
		According to Rich Alarian, a high school friend of Brian's and a member of the Survivors, he and Bob Norberg were recruited by Brian to add backing vocals to four or five songs to finish the SURFER GIRL album while the rest of the Beach Boys were on the road.

		The album was rushed out REALLY fast, recorded very quickly with whatever songs the group happened to have lying around in their songbooks, plus a single or two.
		Not a bad album but the constant touring was starting to strain Brian Wilson and the rest, but their was also another factor: Beatlemania started during the release of this album and threatened to take some of their popularity away.
		My problem with the album grew not from the most common gripe that the majority of the tracks are minor key ballads, and the fact that there is a lack of diversity, it's simply that too many of the tracks are quite simply nowhere near good enough to be considered classic album material.

		Their fourth album, a themed collection of car songs, contains four songs (including the title track) previously released on earlier albums and was therefore put on a different twofer to avoid duplication on the same CD.
		The Surfer girl album is the stronger of the two albums here, with seven of the twelve songs being surfing music, of which I particularly like the title track, Hawaii and Catch a wave.
		According to the liner notes the double-sided single Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe was recorded on 12 June 1963 and the other 10 tracks that make up the album Surfer Girl were entirely recorded at Western Studios in Hollywood on 16 July 1963; quite a feat.

		By the time Surfer Girl rolled around, Brian was not only feeling his oats as a steady singer and songwriter, but also that of a producer as he does so on this album, the first truly strong offering from the Beach Boys.
		Surfer Girl was an astronomic leap forward from the simple three chord 'rock-outs' of their first two albums, SURFIN' SAFARI and SURFIN' USA.
		Though most of the album is great, there are some real stinkers on there too (The instrumental THE ROCKIN' SURFER and the naff SOUTH BAY SURFERS are clunky and uninteresting) but overall the album is varied, fun, thoughtful and a definite leap forward for the group.

		The original IN CONCERT album was a single disc set, not a two-record set like the one that came out.
		The recordings on the original version of the album were made on the group's Winter 1972 tour (with Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille among the backing musicians), while the recordings on the released album were made on the group's Summer 1973 tour.
		BTW, the live "Heroes and Villains" on ENDLESS HARMONY SOUNDTRACK is from the original version of the IN CONCERT album.

		Presented in chronological order, with session dates and photos appropriate to each album, these CD's are perhaps the most important ever released for scholars and serious fans of The Beach Boys.
		The second in the "Unsurpassed Masters" series tackles the Beach Boys sophmore "Surfin' USA" sessions, and in my opinion is more enjoyable than the first disc, due to the increased confidence of the Beach Boys, the greater variety and quality of songs, and the continued excellence of the sonics (listening over digital headphones is great).
		The "Surfer Girl" sessions disc was a disappointment to me, due to one main reason: I consider "Surfer Girl" to be the first great album in the Beach Boys' canon, and the out-takes presented here don't reflect that.

	The Incredible Broadside Brass Bed Band
		Signed to Poison Ring Records, a small Connecticut company, the group recorded their first album in 1972, live in the studio to an audience that had previously been plied with lots of wine.
		There was a spin-off however - a 45 single of one of the songs from the album.
		The single was Comeau's "LITTLE DEAD SURFER GIRL", a satire of 50's rock-a-ballads.

		The first album of the two that make up this twofer, Little deuce coupe, is mostly about cars, while the second, All summer long, is mostly about the beach although cars also feature on that album.
		The lovely ballad "Girls on the Beach" is a finer tribute to beach bunnies than "Surfer Girl" in my opinion and the title track's encapsulation of the joys of summer: (sights, sounds, even tastes) is one of the "shoulda been" hits that leave you scratching your head.
		Somewhat more interesting is the albums ending-- a rewrite of the a capella "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" as "A Young Man Is Gone", but the Boys singing the original lyrics is available on the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey twofer and is vastly superior.
