Surf ski - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was soon realised that a double surfski could do almost everything that a surfboat could do, and in 1946, the importance of surfskis was noted by the surf lifesaving associations and they were included in lifesaving competitions and championships.
In the 1960 the first foam surfboards and surfskis were made, being carved from a single block of expanded polystyrene foam, strengthened with wooden stringers and covered with a thin layer of fibreglass.
Surfskis also differ from long distance racing kayaks in that they are much longer, have more longitudinal curvature (rocker), are more stable and the paddler is seated more towards the centre of the craft to enhance wave riding ability.

 Introducing the surfski
Most top racers used a surfski because a capsize eliminated the possibility of hitting their heads on a rock on the bottom of the river, and a wet exit didn't mean the end of their race or a lost and broken boat.
The main manufacturers of surfskis are in California, South Africa and Australia and the boats are sold directly from the manufacturer, or through an importer.
The hull of a surfski is no different from a regular cockpit kayak of similar measurements, and boat speed is not dependent on the deck or seating layout.

IOL: Chewed surfski proves close brush with shark
When a shark took a bite out of the surfski on which he was paddling during a training session with four friends, Fish Hoek lifesaver Lyle Maasdorp thought his friends were playing a trick on him.
Maasdorp was intent on remaining seated on the surfski, but with its tail dragged under water and the seat submerged, he slipped out and wound up with his forearm on the shark's back.
The surfski is too damaged to be fixed, so Maasdorp is to cut off the back half and mount it on his bedroom wall.

Technique in Kayaking and Surfski paddling
Further, the typical reaction of a new kayaker to a racing sea kayak or racing surfski is that these elite boats are nearly as tippy as a floating log----but given the proper paddling technique, aided by the wing paddle, these same novices quickly feel enormous changes in stability and ease of propulsion.
As an example of becoming comfortable in a horrendous current with huge nasty waves coming from all directions, we have shot a video of an elite surfski paddler (using a wing paddle of course) passing through the worst inlet in South Florida, the Boynton Beach Inlet (considered to be non-navigable by the Coast Guard).
The surfski paddlers seem to be better able to handle these extremely rough conditions than all but the largest boats which can pass through this inlet.
