Symphony No. 94 (Haydn) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Symphony No. 94 in G major (Hoboken 1/94) is the second of the so-called twelve London symphonies (numbers 93-104) written by Joseph Haydn.
The Surprise Symphony is scored for a Classical-era orchestra consisting of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and the usual string section consisting of first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.
This is the surprise movement, a theme and variations in 2/4 time and the subdominant key of C major.

 Program Notes
The Londoners were especially appreciative of the twelve symphonies he wrote for these trips, and he learned quickly how gratifying it was to play to their unabashed need to be entertained.
Thus, the "surprise" in the "Surprise" Symphony is introduced in the slow movement, as are the "military" instruments in the "Military" Symphony and the "rude noise" in Symphony No. 93 (from which the British sense of decorum has, however, withheld a pet name).
Thus, the "clock" in the slow movement of this afternoon’s symphony finally pops a spring after a few early warnings, but when it is "fixed" (that is, when normalcy is restored after a violently disruptive minor-key episode) it continues in sublime (mechanical?) indifference to the disruption.

 Guide to the 4th Symphony
I believe the symphony expresses some inner program, but it is precisely because it talks about "inner weather" (to borrow Frost's happy term about poets) that it remains hidden.
People also thought that the symphony was unprecedented in VW's output, but in fact it culminates a phase that began in the 20s, at least with the powerful oratorio Sancta Civitas, and continued through the ballet Job and the piano concerto.
He builds the symphony out of two intervals: the semitone (or half step; notes B and C on a piano) and the perfect fourth (the opening two notes of "Here Comes the Bride").

"The Surprise" symphony, whose second movement the class will hear today, is one of Haydn's 12 so-called London Symphonies, which were written for much larger instrumental forces than the ones he wrote for the Esterhazy court, where he was limited to two oboes, two horns, and stringed instruments.
Symphony is the name we give to a piece composed for a classical orchestra and usually has several parts or movements, Many of Haydn's symphonies have short nicknames that give clues to what they are about musically.
The "surprise" is in that second movement, and it will be up to you to find and identify the musical "surprise" after you've listened.

The Symphony, which was originally labeled "Grand Overture with the Militaire Movement," premiered at the Hanover Square Rooms, which could hold an audience of 800, on March 31, 1794.
The Symphony opens with an imposing slow introduction; the spirited Allegro that follows (beginning with a solo flute and the oboes) is tautly constructed in Haydn's usual matter.
The third movement is a minuet, a courtly dance with a stately triple rhythm, the standard for the 18th-century symphony.

 Sonic Glossary: Homophony
In this example from Haydn's Symphony No. 94 (nicknamed "Surprise" because of this movement), the violins carry the melody, and the lower strings support it with a bass line and chords.
When composers during the eighteenth century and after included stylized versions of minuets in their symphonies and string quartets--dance music for which no dancing was intended--homophony was often the prevailing texture as well.
The following example of the beginning of Mozart's Symphony no. 40 in G minor is a kind of enriched homophony with an active, agitated accompaniment that changes its pattern at the cadence.
