Topic: Surreal humour

Surreal humour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Surreal humour is a form of humour based on bizarre juxtapositions, absurd situations, and nonsense logic.
Probably the most common form of surreal humour is the non-sequitur, in which one statement is followed by another with no logical progression, as in the jokes below.
In the 1960s, surrealist humour was combined with counter-culture in movements such as the Youth International Party, Situationism, and Discordianism and in the work of psychedelic musicians such as The Beatles, Frank Zappa, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Pink Floyd, and Captain Beefheart.

A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, a quality which all people share, although the extent to which an individual will personally find something humorous depends on a host of absolute and relative variables, including, but not limited to geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education and context.
The term "humour" as formerly applied in comedy referred to the interpenetration of the sublime and the ridiculous.
For this reason humour is often a subjective experience as it depends on a special mood or perspective from its audience to be effective.

 Surrealism
Surrealism is an artistic movement, and an aesthetic philosophy that aims for the liberation of the mind by emphasizing the critical and imaginative powers of ''the unconscious''.
The term ''surreal'' is also applied more generally to describe the juxtaposition of ordinary events, actions or objects in a manner where the totality does not comport with ordinary ''sense'' or social decorum.
The definition and construction of the surreals is due to John Conway, and exemplifies Conway's characteristic notational cleverness and originality.

If the basis of a comic is humour then it has to be pant-wettingly funny throughout, if it is not then the stories have to be engaging.
For the most part the strips in here are more obscure and surreal than funny and of a level of humour that you grow out of when you are 11.
It is a great shame that the creators of the comic strips in here have mistaken silliness for humour in their approach, so despite my appreciate for the free cosmic rod I have to say that I do not think this comic deserved to win.

Not only is this novel surreal, it's also a piss-take of the nerdy pseudoscientific novel with copius footnotes and references to the guru de Selby.
The surreal (not absurd!) humour employed by Monty Python and Co. is directly traceable back to Flann O'Brien, (via the Goon Show - Spike Milligan cites F. O'B as his main inspiration).
I think it's one of the masterpieces of surreal humour, with a dark edge and a light touch - the dialogue is a brilliant evocation of, and hilarious exaggeration of, the language and peculiar logic employed by local officialdom not just in rural Ireland in the 40's, but recognisable as a universal archetye.

The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin - an infinity plus review
The title alone, though leading you gently by the hand, doesn't really prepare you for this hugely enjoyable detective thriller written in the inimitable Rankin style, and it has to said, it will not convert you, unless of course you are way inclined to surreal humour.
Rankin's humour and style is harsher, not so commercially viable as Pratchett's, which is why the Discworld King overshot him, sales-wise.
Rankin is for me, though, superior, with his surreal approach to storylines, wonderful wordplay and offbeat humour.
