Surrey was incorporated in 1879, but it wasn’t until 1993 that the area officially became a city.
Surrey’s boundaries include the Fraser River to the north, the Canada-US borders to the south and the municipalities of Delta and Langley to the west and east respectively.
Surrey City Council consists of the mayor and eight members of council, who are elected by Surrey residents every three years.

Surrey city council approved plans Monday night for a private Sikh school backed by Ripudaman Singh Malik, one of two men acquitted in the 1985 Air India bombings.
About 400 people packed a Surrey council meeting for a debate on the proposal for the religious school, which will teach Sikh culture, history and religion to elementary and high school students.
The Sikh community praised Surrey city council for making an unbiased decision which had everything to do with the education of the children rather than Race or backers of the School.

The Arts Council with the Surrey Arts Teachers’ Association and with the cooperation of Central City Shopping Centre, accept the work of over 100 of Surrey secondary school students from grade 8 – 12 and exhibits their art for two months where it can be viewed by students, parents, friends and the community at large.

SURREY - An injury that ended in the death of an 18-month-old steer at the Cloverdale Rodeo on the weekend was an unusual "freak accident," said rodeo veterinarian Edward Wiebe.
"Because Surrey is becoming an increasingly urban area, I think the acceptance levels for the treatment of animals is getting lower," she said.
The society, which mounts a campaign every year to educate the public on rodeo issues, says it will be appealing to Surrey city council later this year for an end to the rodeo.

The recent decision by Surrey city council to limit the size of homes in one of the Lower Mainland city's oldest neighbourhoods has triggered an angry debate, including allegations of racism.
Council's decision Monday night to limit the size of new homes in the neighbourhood to 3,200 square feet has lit up the phone lines at Punjabi language radio stations, with listeners complaining that the new bylaw has clear racial overtones.
But Surrey Mayor Diane Watts denies there was any racism involved and defends the neighbourhood as a "heritage community," which residents are "very passionate" about.

The City has imposed a 5000 percent business license fee increase on the pharmacies dispensing methadone in the Whalley area.
