 Encyclopedia: Surrey Senior League
The Surrey Senior League was a regional football league in Surrey, England and environs that in 2003 merged into the Combined Counties League as its First Division.
There is still a Surrey County Senior League at the next layer down the pyramid.
It should be noted that neither the pre-2003 SSL teams nor the SCSL teams are eligible for the Surrey Senior Cup, a competition organized by the Surrey County Football Association that is usually won by a Football Conference, Football League or Isthmian League team.

The Dons set a new all-time record for longest streak of unbeaten league games at any level of senior football in the United Kingdom with their 76th, a 1-1 draw at Bromley F.C., on November 13, 2004, and a 2-1 victory over Bashley F.C. on November 27 made it 78.

In 1925-26, they were winners of the Surrey Senior League and again in 1926-27, also in the same season they were winners of the Surrey Senior League Charity Cup beating Egham Town 1-0.
Epsom reached their first cup final for 8 years, but lose 3-0 and 4-0 at Edmonton in the two legs of the Athenian League Division Two Challenge Cup.
In 1976-77, Epsom finished in 10th place and were Athenian League Cup finalists and with new floodlights installed they were invited to apply for election to the newly - formed Division 2 of the Isthmian League, this they did and were duly elected.

The Surrey Senior Cup was won in 1952 but Ks were a mid-table side in the Isthmian League for much of the decade.
But although the Surrey Cup was won again in 1967, Ks entered a long period of decline after McCormack's Ks career was cut off in its prime by a broken leg suffered in 1965.

The Surrey County F.A. was formed in 1877 playing representative games against Kent, Middlesex etc. At a meeting in Guildford on 16 March 1882 it was reorganised and voted to affiliate to the Football Association and at the same time a County Senior Cup competition.
The first winners of the Surrey Senior Cup were Reigate Priory who were victorious six times before the end of the century.Other successfull teams in the early days were Guys Hospital, Weybridge, West Croydon and Townley Park.
A Junior Cup was introduced in 1886 - 87, a Senior Charity Shield in 1895 - 96 and a Surrey Junior League in 1898 - 99.

Progress accelerated under the guidance of Sid Cann, an FA Cup winner as a Manchester City player, and the Club's "Golden Era" commenced with a visit to Wembley for the 1963 Amateur Cup Final, which was lost 4-2 to Wimbledon, when Eddie Reynolds scored 4 times with his head.
More FA Cup glory was tasted in 1993 when both Colchester and Torquay were beaten on their own turf before a 3-2 defeat at Notts County in Round 3.
After winning the Surrey Senior Cup in 2003, a good start to the 2003/4 season promised well, but a terrible run of form saw the side fall dangerously close to the relegation zone and crash out of the FA Cup and FA Trophy.

They reached the final of the Surrey Senior Cup, beaten 5-2 in a replay against Dulwich Hamlet, while they were back on the foreign road again, this time to Holland for two wins out of three - Sparta Rotter­dam again their only conquerors, by the closer margin of 2-1.
The Club were finalists in the Surrey Senior Cup but were beaten 3-2 by Kingstonian at Selhurst Park even though they fought back strongly after being three down in the first eighteen minutes.

Although their League form was disappointing it was compensated for by a first win in the Surrey Senior Cup in 1938 when Dulwich Hamlet were beaten 2-1 at Selhurst Park.
Cup performances were markedly better than those in the League, culminating in a spirited performance against Woking in the Surrey Senior Cup Final which forced the GM Vauxhall Conference side to work hard for their 2-0 win.
In addition the Surrey Senior Cup Final was reached, although Crystal Palace proved too strong by three goals to nil in the final at Gander Green Lane.

They did make it through to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, before losing out 1-0 against Guildford City, but there were first round defeats in the Amateur Cup, London and Surrey Charity Cups, and second round exits in the Surrey Senior and London Senior.
The Surrey Senior Cup provided the high spot for the season as Wimbledon again made it through to the final, only to be pipped 1-0, this time by Summerstown.
That was on top of that FA Cup run that took them into the first round with goals galore 15-2 against Polytechnic, 3-0 against West Norwood, 6-2 against Tooting Town and 7-1 against Epsom, plus that 5-1 against the professionals of Guildford City.

The Senior league will be played in two zones with return matches with the zone winners receiving $50,000 each, the runners-up $25,000 each, and after a play-off for the Challenge Trophy, the winners will collect $100,000.
In the Senior League it will be $6,000 for every victory, $3,000 for every first innings lead and $5,000 each for individual performances.
The teams were placed in the leagues based on last season's performance and the top six from the Surrey Senior Cup, the top two from the Middlesex Senior Cup and the top two from the Cornwall Senior Cup were placed in the Super League and the rest, along with KSCA, in the Senior League.

In Surrey, Hertfordshire, Kent and Essex, it is possible to think of a county as being synonymous with its administrative borders.
However, the generally accepted way of determining the meanings of words is to regard the general current usage, and the term Middlesex in the sense of a county is clearly not restricted in general usage to a historical context.
The Middlesex Senior Cup was first played for in the 1888-9 season, long before Enfield Town FC had been formed.

Not until 1905 did Mill Lane Mission form a Senior side and officially register Mill Lane Mission Football Club with the Surrey FA at the end of the Summer of 1905, (and it is this date (1905) which the club adopts as it's Official birthday).
Two League Championship's and victories in various local and Surrey cup competitions were achieved and in 1922-23 the Robins became founder members of the Surrey Senior League.
This was the Robins first ever triumph in the County Cup and ended Sutton's domination of the competition for the last five years; they also recorded their highest ever final league placing in the Premier Division of fourth.

In 1978 the Club applied for, and were granted, senior status and they were accepted into the Combined Counties Football League for the start of the 1979/80 season.
In 1997 they were runners-up in the Challenge Cup for the first time and won it at the first attempt, winning the final 3-0 against Ryman First Division side Hampton on their ground.
Another highlight of that season was taking on Woking at Kingfield in the Surrey Senior Cup and losing only 1-0 against a virtually full first team in front of a crowd of over 1,000.

Woking's first game in the Isthmian League on the 9th September 1911 resulted in a 1-1 draw at London Caledonians, who were ultimately to take the title that year - with the Cards ending their first season at this higher level in a respectable mid table position.
The following year brought the Surrey Senior Cup and Surrey Charity Shield to Woking for the first time with a 5-0 win against Metrogas and a 2-0 defeat over Old Kingstonians respectively; it was in this Charity Shield cup run that the Cardinals recorded their club record 17-4 home win over Farnham.
There was a shut down for the Great War and in 1921 a permanent eleven acre site was acquired for the club at Kingfield for the princely sum of £150 per acre plus a £250 sum paid to the tenant for compensation for loss of crops.

However, the club soon made its mark by winning the East and West Surrey League Championship in season 1902/03 and two years later becoming runner-up in the Surrey Senior Cup.

We had a monumental FA Cup run in 1975, reaching the third round for the first time in our history, and overcoming Burnley 1-0 away from home.
Gavin Bolger became the 1st player to start 100 game for the Dons in the London Senior Cup match against Fisher Athletic, he also had the captains armband for the match which the Dons lost 4-0.

THE first round of the Rothmans National Cricket Championship got under way over the weekend and with hardly a surprise, the promise is that it will be business as usual with the top teams too good for the rest and fighting among themselves for the honours.
Keating scored 64 and Campbell 63 against Kingston in the second innings, they are both reasonably good batsmen, according to reports, they batted well, and before the season is over they could well inspire Boys' Town to performances which could knock off one or two of the fancied teams in the Surrey Senior Cup.
That would be a surprise, and in terms of their pride and their chances of winning the title, it would certainly hurt the team or teams which suffer at their hands.
