Surry County was formed from a portion of James City County in the Royal Colony of Virginia in 1652.
Surry County initially consisted of Lawne's Creek Parish and Southwark Parish (of the Church of England).
The county is bisected by State Route 31 and State Route 40, as well as its major artery, the historic path of State Route 10 which follows the general line of the south bank of the James River between Prince George County and Isle of Wight County.

The middle portion of Surry County was formed into Sussex County in 1753 and Surry reached its present bounds at that time.
Due to the loss of many of the court records of Dinwiddie, Charles City, and Prince George counties, the records of Surry County have taken on even greater importance because there was much movement in these early years over county lines and the James River.

John Bynum, son of John, apparently has moved from Surry to Lunenburg (later Halifax) in the first several months of 1749.  He and John will also be on the tithables for 1750.  That this is the same person as the John Bynum of Surry is shown by several records.

 Bacon's Castle, Surry County Virginia
According to Preservation News of the National Trust, this building is "the sole surviving high Jacobean manor house in America" (quoted in Smith 41).
It is also the oldest documented residence in the state of Virginia.
Although built for Arthur Allen in 1665, it is named for Nathaniel Bacon, who led the first revolt against the British in 1676 and whose followers fortified this house.
