Topic: Survey sampling

Survey sampling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In statistics, survey sampling is random selection of a sample from a finite population.
The possibility of very expensive or very atypical samples has led to a variety of modifications such as stratified sampling, cluster sampling, and multistage sampling.
The samples in such surveys are therefore non-probability samples of the population, and the validity of estimates of parameters based on them is unknown.

Stratified sampling is a method of sampling from a population in statistics.
Sampling is the use of a subset of the population to represent the whole population.
Sampling (statistics) Sampling is that part of statistical practice concerned with the selection of individual observations intended to yield some knowledge about a population of concern, especially for the purposes of statistical inference.

 Basic Monthly Survey Sampling
The sample initially was selected to meet specific reliability criteria for the Nation, for each of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, and for the substate areas of New York City and the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan area.
The sampling ratio occasionally is modified slightly to hold the size of the sample relatively constant given the overall growth of the population.
In a sample PSU with a probability of selection of 1 in 10 and a State sampling ratio of 3,000, a within-PSU sampling ratio of 1 in 300 achieves the desired ratio of 1 in 3,000 for the stratum.

 Introduction to Sampling
With nonprobability sampling, in contrast, population elements are selected on the basis of their availability (e.g., because they volunteered) or because of the researcher's personal judgment that they are representative.
Samples are evaluated primarily according to the procedures by which they were selected rather than by their final composition or size.
Studies with such samples are useful primarily for documenting that a particular characteristic or phenomenon occurs within a given group or, alternatively, demonstrating that not all members of that group manifest a particular trait.

Sampling error is the degree to which a sample might differ from the population.
Stratified sampling is often used when one or more of the stratums in the population have a low incidence relative to the other stratums.
Quota sampling is the nonprobability equivalent of stratified sampling.

 Needs Survey Sampling Techniques
The way to determine who comprises the sample depends on a number of factors, such as the availability of and access to the individuals in the representative group, the availability of resources to use in the selection of the sample, and the technical expertise of those involved in the data collection.
Proportional random sampling allows for the sample to be taken using simple random sampling for each of the subgroups (for example, male and female), according to their representation proportionately to the entire group.
Equal allocation stratified sampling is used when the same percent of the group members is selected from each group, using simple random sampling, regardless of the total size of the group.

The efficiency by which a survey sample is developed will depend on: internal skills in your company for data query and reporting, consolidation versus dispersion of relevant databases, data accuracy, and the extent to which there are multiple files with multiple data structures.

 PA 765: Sampling
In systematic sampling there is the danger of order bias: the sampling frame list may arrange subjects in a pattern, and if the periodicity of systematic sampling matches the periodicity of that pattern, the result may be the systematic over- or under-representation of some stratum of the population.
Repeated systematic sample has the side benefit that the variability in the subsample means for a given variable is a measure of the variance of that estimate in the entire sample.
The researcher seeks to identify variables where the sample mean deviates from the population mean, and speculates (preferably on the basis of prior literature) on the impact of such bias on the dependent variables of interest.

 Questionnaire Design and Surveys Sampling
A pilot or preliminary sample must be drawn from the population and the statistics computed from this sample are used in determination of the sample size.
Observations used in the pilot sample may be counted as part of the final sample, so that the computed sample size minus the pilot sample size is the number of observations needed to satisfy the total sample size requirement.
Note, incidentally, that as long as the sample is a small fraction of the total population, the actual size of the population is entirely irrelevant for the purposes of this calculation.

 Survey Sampling Questions
One goal of a sample survey may be to compare two parts of a target population (these could be described as sub-populations), or a part of the population to the whole population.
In addition, the rotating basin design could be embedded in a state wide sample survey by intensifying the sampling on the particular basin or set of basins for the year(s) that basin or set of basins was under study.
Because survey sampling is intended to characterize the status of the resource as a whole, it is generally not useful for enumerating a list of a specific type, for example, a list of all the impaired waterbodies.

In the context of survey sampling, two types of statistical inferences are available: the model-based inference and the design-based inference which exploits only the randomization entailed by the sampling process (no assumption needed about the model).
Examining sampling distributions of sample means computed from samples of different sizes drawn from a variety of distributions, allow us to gain some insight into the behavior of the sample mean under those specific conditions as well as examine the validity of the guidelines mentioned above for using the central limit theorem in practice.
The sample size needed for the approximation to be adequate depends strongly on the shape of the parent distribution.

Given that the sample was selected using a random process, and each element had an equal chance of being selected for the sample, results obtained from measuring the sample can generalize to the entire population.
Since random sampling techniques are not employed consistently though out the methodology, the ability of the collected data to generalize to the entire population is reduced, because certain members of the Web user community may not have had an equal chance to participate.
Despite the evidence to support the Survey results, we remain unconvinced that the Survey's sampling methodology is optimal and welcome suggestions and further comments on this subject.
