Human League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware left to form Heaven 17 it seemed that Phil Oakey and Philip Adrian Wright, the sole remaining group members, would be unable to sustain the band, which, just before the split, was beginning to achieve wider popularity.
However, they recruited bass player Ian Burden, guitarist Jo Callis (formerly of The Rezillos) and, famously, fronted the band with two singers, Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall, whom they had met in a Sheffield nightclub.
At the time, synthpop was starting to become fashionable due to the success of groups like OMD and Ultravox, but female vocals were rarely heard on synth records, so the addition of Sulley and Catherall gave the group a distinctive sound.

Octopus by Human League (lyrics & reviews)
Add to the mix the beautiful if not note- perfect vocals of Jo Anne Catherall and Susan Sulley that work well in contrast with Oakley, and what you have here on some levels, an updated version of "Dare",with a touch of techno/trance.
They build on the momentum with the funk- based flavor of "Filling Up With Heaven", where Sulley and Catherall add enough of a sprinkle of their catchy, elongated vocal riff without overwhelming the explosive hook.
Sulley and Catherall immediately chime in "dont be unkind", adding the visual effect that they either walked in on an argument or were standing there the whole time.

Lingering melodies combined with Susan Ann Sulley's newly trained tones make it the best minutes on the album as well as a contender for the best thing they've ever done.
While "One Man In My Heart" opens with a Strawberry Switchblade (remember them?) impersonation from Susan, the relegation of Oakey's baritone to backing vocals doesn't undermine his position as front man it is simply logical to do it that way.
Susan's loyalty to her 'man' is conveyed with absolute sincerity whilst classic League chord structures play out almost unsubstantially in comparison.

From the catchy and melodic opening track "Tell Me When" to the closing "Cruel Young Lover," singers Phil Oakey, Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall glide through an impressive collection of good old-fashioned synthpop tunes with refreshingly few misguided attempts to fit into prevailing commercial trends.
The appearance of a tune as brilliantly titled as "John Cleese: Is He Funny?" is equally commendable.
