Susan Schmidt Bies (born May 5, 1947 in Buffalo, New York) is a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
Bies received a B.S. in education from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York in 1967 and an M.A. (1968) and a Ph.D. (1972), both in economics, from Northwestern University.
Bies has served as a Fellow at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (1969-70) and as a Fellow at the Northwestern University Center for Urban Affairs (1968-69).

Both the Bies and McGaughey households were in Germantown, a suburb of Memphis, and the two families’ paths crossed in three distinct ways–career, civic duty, and kids’ sports.
Both Governor Bies and her husband, Dr. John D. Bies, until recently a visiting professor of geography at The University of Memphis, became licensed soccer referees, and both held official posts in local or state-level soccer organizations.
Bies explains that the matter came about because a handful of banks were "cherry picking"–taking securities in the portfolio that had gains and selling them–leaving underwater bonds alone.
