The Getting of Wisdom (1977) - Channel 4 Film review
Susannah Fowle, Shelia Helpmann, Patricia KEnnedy, John Waters, Barry Humphries, Kerry Armstrong
Based on a controversial autobiographical early 20th-century novel by Ethel Richardson (so controversial that she was struck from the records of the school she wrote about), this concerns a working-class girl (Fowle) struggling to fight against the snobbishness of her fellow students in an exclusive Melbourne boarding school.
Competently directed by Bruce Beresford, who would go on to better things with Tender Mercies, this seems rather tame and pedestrian in its depiction of the protagonist.

Movie Review - Getting of Wisdom, The - eFilmCritic
The Getting of Wisdom is a well-crafted literary adaptation about a country girl (Susannah Fowle), with the unlikely name of Laura Tweedle Rambotham, attending a snobbish city boarding school in the late nineteenth century.
The cast features an against-type Barry Humphries as a stuffy principal and fine work from Patricia Kennedy as the gentler and quieter Miss Chapman, the most supportive of Laura’s teachers.
Fowle never became a star, but she holds attention, even when the role requires her to be exasperatingly gawky and generally unlikeable.
