According to legend he came to this mountain to flee the insurrection caused by Soga no Umako in which the Emperor Sushun was killed.
It is hard to know what to make of this story since the Soga family supported the introduction of Buddhism in opposition to the Monobe and Nakatomi families who supported the native religion of Shinto.
In any case, legend says that Nojo Taishi was led to this mountain by a sacred bird and here he renounced the world, wore clothing made of bark and vines and lived on nuts and berries.

It is also sometimes called "The Story of Emperor Sushun," because in this letter Nichiren relates the story of an emperor by that name who brought ruin upon himself because of his hot temper.
Nichiren then says that since Kingo was fortunate enough to be born human and encounter the True Law, he should accumulate "the treasures of the heart" and win the respect of others.
Finally, by citing the story of Emperor Sushun and other examples of sages such as Confucius, Nichiren teaches Kingo that he, as a practitioner of true Buddhism, should conduct his daily life admirably and be considerate of others.
