Suspended animation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suspended animation is the slowing of life processes by external means without termination.
Placing astronauts in suspended animation has been proposed as one way for an individual to reach the end of an interplanetary or interstellar journey, avoiding the necessity for a gigantic generation ship; occasionally the two concepts have been combined, with generations of "caretakers" supervising a large population of frozen passengers.
Suspended animation is also a common device in fiction used to transport individuals from one time period to another, as in The Man Who Awoke, by Laurence Manning.

Although a Suspended Animation Standby with a team of cryopreservation professionals is advantageous, volunteer local groups can sometimes also provide some Standby capabilities, as was the case for a Toronto CI patient in the Fall of 2002 (see The First Cryonics Case in Toronto, Canada for details).

Suspended animation also has a role in the growth of normal cells, Dr Roth says.
Zebrafish in the wild have not yet been seen to undergo suspended animation, but the metabolic shutdown induced in the laboratory resembles the reversible state of limbo that has been observed in other organisms.
Bodies or organs held in a state of suspended animation could be repaired and suffer no long-term consequences from extreme stress such as oxygen deprivation.

 Roth Lab
Our work in suspended animation derives from the fact that many animals exhibit what we call "metabolic flexibility," the ability to dial down their respiration and heartbeat and, in effect, "turn themselves off" in response to physical or environmental stress.
We use the term suspended animation to refer to a state where all observable life processes (using high resolution light microscopy) are stopped: the animals do not move nor breathe and the heart does not beat.
We have found that we are able to put a number of animals (yeast, nematodes, drosophila, frogs, and zebrafish) into a state of suspended animation for up to 24 hours through one basic technique: reducing the concentration of oxygen.

Safar in communication with Dr. Ronald Bellamy of the US Army, decided in 1984 that "suspended animation" should be explored, for transport and repair under protected cardiac arrest (if organ viability could be preserved), followed by delayed resuscitation using CPB.
The goal of our ongoing multicenter research program, is to induce suspended animation with a pharmacologic strategy feasible in the field, and continue it when CPB becomes available, with an ultraprofound hypothermic strategy, to achieve complete recovery after more than 2 hours of total circulatory arrest.

And maybe that's the point of Suspended Animation, that in the complete incomprehensibility and outlandishness of the situations, there's some element of truth in the characters themselves.
Here are a few of the highlights: animated segments featuring the face of the torturer, Freudian killer weirdness, a girl with two different colored eyes and a creepy painting.

By suspended animation I mean any means by which we can keep someone alive but unconscious, indefinitely.
The suspended animation we see in science fiction films provides an ideal example: the suspended person is placed that way in good health, say for several hundred years to last out an interstellar journey.
In that sense their desire for suspended animation in no way deals with one central event of cryon- ics.
