  Susquehanna State Park History
Several buildings at Susquehanna State Park which are associated with the river's history have been restored and are open to the public.
With mule drawn barges plying its waters, the Susquehanna and Tidewater was a major commercial waterway until 1889 when the combined efforts of railroad competition and a flood forced its closing.
Located within Susquehanna State Park, the Museum is a private, not for profit museum which preserves and demonstrates the rural arts and crafts of the 1880-1920 period.

The first Susquehanna was laid down by the New York Navy Yard in 1847; launched on 5 April 1850; and was commissioned on 24 December 1850, Capt. John H. Aulick in command.
Susquehanna and four other Union warships-acting under orders from President Lincoln-bombarded Confederate batteries at Sewell's Point, Va., on 8 May. Three days later, Virginia was blown up by her crew, ending her threat to Union shipping in the Hampton Roads area and freed Susquehanna for duty elsewhere.
Recommissioned on 20 July 1864, Susquehanna was assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron and participated in the abortive attacks on Ft. Fisher, N.C., on Christmas Eve 1864.

USS Susquehanna, a 10,058 gross ton transport, was built at Hamburg, Germany, in 1899 as the North German Lloyd passenger liner Rhein.
Turned over to the Navy and converted to a troopship, she was commissioned as USS Susquehanna in early September 1917 and later received the registry number ID 3016.
After serving as USS Susquehanna during and after World War I, she made commercial voyages in 1920-1922 and was then laid up until scrapped in 1928.
