		Sussex is a traditional county in South East England corresponding roughly in area to the ancient Kingdom of Sussex.
		Sussex still retains a strong local identity and the county's unofficial anthem is Sussex by the Sea.
		The decline of the Sussex ironworks probably accounts for the small increase of population during several centuries, although after the massacre of St Bartholomew upwards of 1500 Huguenots landed at Rye, and in 1685, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, many more refugees were added to the county.

		The ancient kingdom of Sussex had separate county administrations since the 12th century, with the county town of the eastern division being Lewes [1].

		The Ashdown families of Sussex and Kent probably all originated from Ashdown Forest which is today the largest area of heathland vegetation in south-eastern England and one of the most important semi-natural wildlife habitats in Britain.
		Her residence when she was 2 years old is recorded in the 1851 census as "Edge of Forest", Withyham, Sussex where she is living with her unmarried mother Silby Ashdown at the home of her grandfather Thomas Ashdown (b.1785).
		Eleanor Ashdown was married at the age of 17 years to Hemsley, George (1847-1913)at Saint Deny, Rotherfield, Sussex on 17 November 1866 and her marriage certificate shows her father as James Avery and her residence as Poundfield.
