English football league system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the top is the FA Premier League (which may be referred to as level 1 of the league "pyramid"), a single-division league of 20 clubs.
Next down from the Football Conference are three regional leagues, each associated different geographical areas (though they often overlap): the Northern Premier League covers the north of England; the Southern League covers the south of England (except the South East), the Midlands and parts of Wales and the Isthmian League covers the South East.
The league table is always ordered with whoever has the most points at the top and the least at the bottom (ways of distinguishing between clubs level on points differ from league to league).

The National League System, otherwise known as the football pyramid, is a comprehensive league structure for football clubs in England playing below the level of the FA Premier League and The Football League.
The National League System has a hierarchical format with promotion and relegation between leagues at different levels, and allows even the smallest club to dream of rising to the very top of the English football league system.
The FA Premier League and The Football League comprise the top 92 clubs in the English game, and two teams from the Conference are able to achieve promotion to the lowest division of The Football League each season.

Lancing & Sompting on the Web - Lancing Football Club news, information, match fixtures and results
Lancing Football Club had its origins in 1938 with a group of youngsters who used to kick about on Monks Recreation Ground, which is adjacent to the club's present home.
The cricket and badminton sections survive to this day, but the footballers were obliged to form an independent organisation upon their election to the Sussex County League in 1948.
An application to join the Sussex County Football League for the 1947/48 Season was rejected, but Lancing were allowed to enter the FA Amateur Cup, and consequently stunned the local football world by reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round, beating four established County League clubs before eventually losing 2-1 at home to Tooting and Mitcham United.

 Condensed Club History
When Worthing moved to the Corinthian League in the summer of 1948 Lancing were their only possible replacements in the County League.
In 1965 Lancing were again County League runners-up, unlucky that, what was probably their best ever side, came up against a magnificent Lewes side that went through the entire season unbeaten by any Sussex club and then joined the Athenian League.
However the League eventually awarded the club all three points from the Mile Oak game (which ironically Lancing should have won by a comfortable margin), which took their tally to 63 points and booked their place back into the top flight after an absence of 10 seasons.

A comparatively mediocre spell then ensued but a 3rd runners-up spot in 1990/91, was to herald a period of dominance in the County League.
The irony was that it was the runners-up who were promoted to the Southern League at the end of that season, whilst with their emphasis on the team rather than their facilities, Peacehaven had little hope of further progression.
