Topic: Sustainable fisheries

Overfishing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like forestry and hunting, fishery crisis is susceptible to economic interaction between ownership or stewardship and sustainability, or the tragedy of the commons.
The ability for nature to restore the fisheries is also dependent on whether the ecosystems are still in a state to allow fish numbers to build again.
According to the FAO State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2004 report, it is estimated that in 2003 of the main fish stocks or groups of resources for which assessment information is available "approximately one-quarter were overexploited, depleted or recovering from depletion (16 percent, 7 percent and 1 percent respectively) and needed rebuilding."

 SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES
Fisheries management is certainly a necessary condition for sustainable fisheries but it is not the only condition.
At present, sustainable fisheries are being practiced in a number of countries and regions.
But the ability of the countries concerned to maintain sustainability in their fisheries and the possibilities for others to move towards sustainable fisheries is being seriously undermined by a global market characterized by subsidized overcapacity and other market distortions affecting fisheries and fish products.

 Sustainability
discussion of sustainable fisheries cannot only be about the environment but most also consider community, culture, and jobs.
Many environmental websites say that the Pollock fishery is a well managed fishery, yet we see irrefutable evidence of overfishing with the crash of Stellar Sea lion populations in Alaska.
Sustainable fisheries are a very complicated issue constantly in flux, blame cannot be laid at the doorstep of one group or reason.

The aim is to sustain the capacity of ecosystems to produce goods and services at local to global scales and to provide equitable consideration of the rights and needs of all beneficiaries and users of ecosystem goods and services.
Fisheries are managed in an arena of uncertainty that includes an incomplete understanding of and ability to predict fish population dynamics, interactions among species, effects of environmental factors on fish populations, and effects of human actions.

 Sustainable Fisheries - MarineBio.org
Sustainable fishing has been addressed in the U.S. by the Sustainable Fisheries Act.
Governments provide subsidies to fisheries to enable them to increase the catching capacity of their fleets in the form of new vessels and improvements to existing boats, fuel subsidies, tax benefits, and job support.
Redirecting these funds to be used for improving fishery management would greatly help reduce fishing pressure on already depleted stocks, and would support the industry by preserving the resource for the future.
