Sustainable use of biological diversity, one of the three objectives of the Convention, is essential to achieving the broader goal of sustainable development and is a cross-cutting issue relevant to all biological and natural resources.
Sustainable use entails the introduction and application of methods and processes for the utilization of biodiversity to prevent its long term decline, thereby maintaining its potential to meet current and future human needs and aspirations.
At its fifth meeting, in May 2002, the Conference of the Parties considered sustainable use of biological diversity as a priority issue and adopted decision V/24, on sustainable use as a cross-cutting issue, and decision V/25, on the relationship between biological diversity and tourism within the context of sustainable use.

Sustainable development is not a fixed state of harmony, but rather a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional changes are made consistent with future as well as present needs.
Sustainable development - to be the indefinite survival of the human species (with a quality of life beyond mere biological survival) through the maintenance of basic life support systems (air, water, land, biota) and the existence of infrastructures and institutions which distribute and protect the components of these systems.
Sustainable development may be defined as the development and management of natural resources to ensure or enhance the long-term productive capacity of the resource base and improve the long-term wealth and well-being derived from alternative resource use systems, with acceptable environmental impacts.
