		Geographically, it is the area to the south of Botany Bay.
		Sutherland Railway Station was opened in 1885, named after John Sutherland, a Minister of Works during the 1870s who had argued most forcefully for the railway.
		The Sutherland Shire workforce is highly educated, with significant skills derived from vocational qualifications and a large share of the population with an advanced diploma, diploma or tertiary qualification.

		A proposal to build a new railway station at Sutherland Hospital in Sydney's south has been dealt a blow, with an independent study concluding that its cost would outweigh its benefits.
		The report, prepared for Sutherland Shire Council and the New South Wales Government, predicted the Sutherland Hospital station would cost $35 million to build and run at an operating deficit of $600,000 per year.
		Sutherland mayor Phil Blight says other options to relieve traffic congestion around the hospital are now being considered.
