Sutherland, whose character walks with a limp throughout the film, claimed that at one point in the shooting, he forgot which leg was supposed to be the gimp, and production came to a halt while everybody stood around scratching their heads.
Sutherland seems to have a stronger handle on the whispy vagaries of the entertainment business than we would have originally given him credit for, so we've got to ask what he's going to do when the ride is over.

There were fabulous views now across over the pass, to the north of Mount Eliot, the Arthur valley and the Sutherland Falls valley, although the falls and Lake Quill were hidden behind a ridge.
The walk out to Sutherland Falls took half an hour to 45 minutes, and was a slight uphill.
When she came back, she seemed full of energy and very talkative, but I soon found out that this was just how she is. After lazing in the sun for a while, watching people go behind the falls, the falls fell into shadow, and it got cold — time to go.

A pretty watercourse which drains into the North West Arm of Port Hacking, it passes through a series of small rapids and races before tumbling over a 10 metre high falls which is quite spectacular after heavy rains.

The roar of the falls was like a jet engine and the wind created by the falling water blew spray over a wide area.
At one time the road used to be closed in winter due to the dangers of avalanches but now with a better understanding of the mechanics of an avalanche the snow fields are constantly monitored and if any are in danger of slipping then the road is closed and the avalanche deliberately started with explosives.

Donald Sutherland was born at the port town of Wick, Caithness, Scotland, probably in 1843 or 1844, the son of Isabella Strachan and her husband, Donald Sutherland, a ropemaker.
After the fall of Tauranga-ika he served as a scout, and took part in the decapitation of fugitives resulting from the misinterpretation of a bounty offer for prisoners.
On 10 November 1880, near the Arthur River, Sutherland spotted a distant flash of water through the treetops, and came to the falls, 1,904 feet high, which thereafter bore his name.

I decided I would go back to a viewpoint for Sutherland Falls I had seen yesterday, about 2 miles back, near the airstrip I had seen from MacKinnon Pass.
I walked quickly back to the Sutherland Falls viewpoint I had in mind, passing several of the guided walkers along the way.
I stopped a while at MacKay Falls, which was one of the most beautiful falls I've seen, pouring through gracefully carved rocks lined with ferns.

It is actually about a 45 minute side hike from the main trail each way, but is worth it.

It wanders through thick rainforest, sidles near steep cliffs, takes you to the base of one of the largest falls in the world, and drops you out at the most spectacular sound anywhere.
This waterfall has an interesting story - Sutherland and Mackay were exploring this river together, and came across a lovely waterfall.

Access from the east is difficult, requiring good weather for several days and a great deal of determination to deal with thick bush and unforgiving terrain, not to mention the sandflies.
The weather had met the criteria and despite the fact that the only attempt on the route we had heard about had failed we began negotiating the maze of slips and thick steep bush on the lower west bank.
These include the incredible dawn chorus of birds at Sutherland Sound and the raw natural power that is Fiordland National Park.
