The Sutlej, also known as Satluj, is the longest of the five rivers of Punjab (five waters) that flows through Northern India, with its source in Tibet near Mount Kailash.
It receives the Beas River in the state of Punjab, India and continues into Pakistan to join Chenab river to form Panjnad river which furthur joins Indus river at Mithankot.
There is substantial evidence to indicate that Sutlej was once an important tributary of the Saraswati river, instead of the Indus river.

Amid confusing reports of the increase in the size of artificial lake in Tibet, the water discharge at the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Project came down to 448 cumecs (cubic metres per second) from 656 cumecs yesterday.
Y.N Apparao, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Sutlej Jal Vikas Nigam (SJVN), told The Hindu that the project was shut due to the high alert declared by the Union Government.
