Sutlej River (Punjabi: ਸਤਲੁਜ, Urdu: ستلج‎, also known as Satluj), is the longest of the five rivers that flow through Indian Punjab in northern India.
The Sutlej was known as Shatadru or Sutudri to Indians in Vedic period and Zaradros or Hesidros to the Greeks, and Sydrus to the Romans.
The waters of the river are allocated to India under the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan.

Sutlej is a mighty river that originates in Tibet from Lake Mansarovar and Rakas Tal.
The hydropower potential in the Sutlej river basin is estimated at 9,000 MW, of which only 1,500 MW has been tapped so far by the Nathpa-Jhakri power project.
A river basin with such a high potential for power generation is certainly an asset for the nation.

The beforehand narrow Ghaggar river bed itself is becoming suddenly wider at the conjunction where the Sutlej should have met the Ghaggar river.

Officials say at least eight bridges have been washed away as the waters of Sutlej have entered the low lying areas and are expected to merge into a reservoir near the town of Bilaspur downstream.
In August last year, a landslide blocked the flow of Tibet's Parechu river causing an artificial lake to be formed, leading to fears of a flood downstream in Himcahal Pradesh.
The Parechu river and lake remain frozen in winter but experts have warned the lake could breach its banks in summer with the melting of snows in the high mountains.

Fifty highly decomposed bodies, including that of five women and two children, have come to the surface of Sutlej river in various villages in Ferozepur district in Punjab, official sources said in Ferozepur on Monday.
Twelve more bodies were found on Monday and district authorities deployed police personnel along the river and issued directions to social and voluntary organisations not to cremate any body.
The bodies surfaced after the water level receded between one feet and five feet from the normal of around 12 feet as water discharge was stopped to conduct some repairs.

A round the clock vigil is being maintained to monitor the water level in the river after reports from China suggested a controlled blast on the Parechu river.

A flood warning was issued as the level of the Parechu river, which flows from China's Tibet to India, rose 12 to 15 metres (40 to 50 feet) after an artificial lake formed by a landslide breached its banks, said Amandeep Garg, a senior official in the Himachal Pradesh state government.
No injuries have been reported in the latest flooding, but Garg said in Shimla that some eight bridges were destroyed on Sutlej tributaries north of the town of Kalpa, the start of the Sutlej river valley in Himachal Pradesh.
Garg said, "Although the river level will drop gradually downstream, we are taking no chances and have asked people to evacuate their homes in places close to the river banks".
