Topic: Suttapitaka

  Suttapitaka - Wikipedia

Nikaya. Who is Nikaya? What is Nikaya? Where is Nikaya? Definition of Nikaya. Meaning of Nikaya.
In reference to the Buddhist canon (the "suttapitaka" especially) the meaning of the term is equivalent to the English "Volume" or "Tome" --although the works in question are so voluminous that few (unexpurgated) editions can fit an entire Nikaya into a single volume each.
The word has other usages, we should note particularly that in Theravada Buddhism of south-east Asia it is the polite term for monastic orders, divisions among monks, or "sects".
The Chinese equivalent is "Agama", and the Suttapitaka of the Buddhist canon is sometimes referred to as "The Agamas" by Mahayana Buddhists --or as "The Nikayas" if they are in the company of Theravada Buddhists.

Well-versed in several languages, he has studied the literature, philosophy, religion, history and sociology of several cultures—ancient, medieval and modern.
For his judgments and evaluations, however, he draws his inspiration from the Mahabharata the Suttapitaka, Plato and Sri Aurobindo.
Having become a convinced Communist by the time he came out of college, he turned against this criminal ideology in 1949 when he came to know what was happening inside Soviet Russia.

Taking scriptures as primary to experience is, I think, a false position, leading to religion and dogma, where you believe because you are told to or because it is written, rather than from your own insight.
These came to be known as the 'sutras' or 'suttas', and are a collection of talks given by the Buddha and some of his close disciples.
They are called the Pali Canon Suttas, or Suttapitaka, (they were written in the Pali language, a derivative of Sanskrit) and they are the Buddhist scriptures which, as I say, I find most meaningful and helpful.

It is, however, certain that the Pali Tipitika grew out of this oral tradition to be modified during the next two centuries in which form it was finally written down in the literary Pali language in the Fourth Council.
Suttapitaka: Suttapitaka consists of the original discourses of the Buddha, and is the most authentic source of our knowledge of dhamma.
Samyutta Nikaya is the third Nikaya of the Suttapitaka.

The Pali text of the Suttapitaka has an exact counterpart in the Sanscrit version of the Buddhist canon.
The Abhidhammapitaka has no such counterpart, hence we may think that it arose earlier (at the beginning of the 3rd century BC) than the Suttapitaka.
The further development of scholastic literature, already in the Buddhist schools, ran in various directions and led to the rise of several variations.

 Khuddakanikaya
KHUDDAKANIKAYA (Pali) or 'the collection of short pieces' is the fifth nikaya or last divisionof the Suttapitaka of Theravada Tripitaka.
Again, some of the 'suttas' are mixed compositions written in prose and verse.
The verses seem to have been introduced at a later period as there are hints to this in certain suttas of the Suttapitaka.

Inquiring for doctrinal concepts, the textual basis of this article is restricted to the talks in the Suttapitaka of the Pali canon.
[22] The texts of the Suttapitaka appear to be unanimous in that point.
I will try to show in the last paragraph that in the same text corpus (the Suttapitaka), we can find an alternative attitude towards the sangha and towards the necessity of sangha membership in the above mentioned areas, especially concerning the soteriological aspect.

The mind in question is worked upon as a technical term and a concept.
With the supplement of lexical elucidation, tabular illustrations and doctrinal relevance the work should virtually exhaust all the cases of conceivable citta in the Suttapitaka and Abhidhammapitaka so long as its literary occurrence is concerned.
The matters inherent of psycho-philosophical interest, however, will be elaborated on with further analysis and deeper ideation.

By returning to the Buddha's original teachings in the Suttapitaka and by drawing on aspects of Zen Buddhism, Buddhadasa crafted a vision of Thai Buddhism as a socially, politically, and intellectually progressive force.
This vision of a modern Theravada Buddhism fit for a modern, democratic, and socially just Thailand continues to inspire large numbers of Thai people in the twenty-first century.
