Completed in 1839, Sutter's Fort, which was originally called "Nuevo Helvetia" (New Switzerland) by its builder, John Sutter, was a 19th century argicultural and trading colony in California.
The compound was built near the junction of the American and Sacramento Rivers.The fort is famous for its association with the Donner Party[?], the Californian Gold Rush and with establishment of Sacramento.
The Main Building of the fort is a two story adobe structure built between 1841 and 1843.

John Augustus Sutter was born in Europe to Swiss-German parents in 1803.
In Sacramento, he built what came to be know as Sutter's Fort -- with walls that were 2 1/2 feet thick and 15 to 18 feet high -- and developed what he considered to be the real wealth of California -- crops such as grapes and wheat, along with vast herds of cattle.
Sutter's Fort stands as the oldest restored Fort in the United States.

Whatever flag was flying on Sutter's Fort was hauled down 11 July, 1846 and replaced by a U.S.Navy 27 star ensign to which had been added a 28th star as the ships at Yerbe Buena had run out of 28 star flags to distribute.
