The original Soochow University was founded by Methodists in Suzhou in 1900 as a merger of three existing institutions: the Po-hsi Academy, the Kung-hsiang Academy, and the Chung-hsi Academy.
The university was split in 1949 as a result of the Chinese Civil War.
The Soochow University on the mainland merged with the Southern Jiangsu College of Culture and Education and the Department of Mathematics and Physics at Jiangnan University to form the Jiangsu Teacher's College in 1952.

Suzhou University does have a rather pleasant campus, but on the other side of Dushu Lake (独墅湖) there are a number of new University campuses.
I was in Suzhou a couple of weeks ago, and i tend to agree that it was somewhat dissapointing, ditto “the master of the nets garden”.
When Suzhou (all Chinese cities in general) was much smaller in population (back when the advertising jingle for Suzhou and Hangzhou was made), it must have been a pretty, idyllic place, but the narrow streets and canals that also functioned as a sewage system did not handle growth all that well.

We were sent from room to room, witnessing Chinese opera songs in a local dialect (so instead of understanding 10% of what was being said, I understood 0% of it), dances, and instrumental performances.

The name of the university is written in yellow on the upper half, and the emblem, a blue stylized plum blossom with the characters "Cheng Da," on a white circle in the flower.
Soochow university is founded in 1900 by the meager of three schools started by The Methodist Episcopal Church South in Soochow, or nowadays Suzhou.

As a scholar with an interest in the American Civil War era and nineteenth century nationalization movements (particularly the Italian Risorgimento), I was invited to offer a session on nationalism and national identity for the Furman and Suzhou students during the seminar portion of the program.
