Suzie Wong, [Nancy Kwan] breathtakingly beautiful and delightfully naive struggles in a world where survival requires innovative adjustment.
One gal Suzie Wong takes an unhealthy liking to Holden and as he spouts ALL the good reasons she shouldn't have anything to do with him, he none the less, surrenders to her charms as a COMPLETE person rather than merely those of her profession.
Suzie is emblematic of a survivor and she will bring tears to your eyes as well as joy to your heart.

The World of Suzie Wong - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The World of Suzie Wong is a 1957 novel written by Richard Mason, which has since been adapted into both a play and a film.
The book is about an English artist, Robert Lomax, who visits Hong Kong and whilst down on his luck falls in love with the mysterious prostitute Suzie Wong.
The area is sometimes known as "the Suzie Wong district" today.

What matters is that after the film's release the most superficial (and offensive) aspects of the Suzie Wong character single-handedly usurped the image of Asian womanhood in the western imagination.
Its spectacular success may be Suzie Wong's greatest sin, the reason that the name still carries a strongly negative emotional charge.
In the Asian consciousness the two most offensive images are Suzie Wong and Madame Butterfly because they degrade Asian women as prostitutes and insult Asian men by implying that only Caucasian men are worthy objects of love.

The World of Suzie Wong (1960): William Holden, Nancy Kwan, Sylvia Sims, Michael Wilding - PopMatters Film Review
Suzie Wong helped set the standard for a whole genre of representation: the duplicitous, hypersexual, yet childlike Asian woman in need of rescue from the vicissitudes of circumstance (typically: poverty, depravity, war).
Suzie takes up with an affluent Brit (Michael Wilding) instead, only to be unceremoniously dumped, arousing Robert's jealousy and pity to the point that he confesses his love.
This sentiment is borne out in a subsequent scene, when he presents Suzie with a traditional Chinese costume that he swears was once worn by an "empress." Exhorting her to try it on, he boasts that she's "going to make him famous," since paintings depicting "traditional" Chinese are much more saleable.

dOc DVD Review: The World of Suzie Wong (1960)
Back in 1960, the world of Suzie Wong may have seemed exotic, titillating, even a little shocking, but global awareness and a severe loosening of social mores in the intervening 44 years has turned Richard Quine's film into just another turgid romance with Asian overtones.
He offers Suzie a job as his model, and begins to casually date her, all the while enduring the consternation and disapproving glances of the prejudiced British elite whom he's courting as future clients.
But over time, as secrets are revealed and he comes to terms with the world of Suzie Wong, Robert gives in to his feelings, and must decide whether to follow his heart or the dictates of a close-minded society.

Because beneath the surface of each film they share the common job of telling the story of their time and place with honesty and true humanity and in the case of Suzie Wong, the story is not such a happy one.
In Suzie's case she must compartmentalize her feeling into body, love, and soul and thus protect herself by pretending that she is the daughter of a rich merchant rather than a Wan Chai bargirl.

Leave your niggling, knee-jerk political correctness at the door and enjoy 1960's The World of Suzie Wong for what it is — a charming multi-cultural romance that was surprisingly daring for its time.
Suzie Wong is a gorgeous movie, shot in Technicolor on location in teeming circa-1960 Hong Kong.
As Suzie gets the bargain-bin treatment here, there are no extras — considering that this popular film was so controversial on its release with its depiction of interracial romance and prostitution, and later so sharply criticized for contributing to stereotypes about Asian women, something on the disc addressing this would have been a nice bonus.

The Digital Review - The World of Suzie Wong - DVD Review
Ah, "Suzie Wong." Even just her character's name itself is a rallying cry for those against racial stereotypes in films.
She's Suzie Wong, a sexy and seductive Chinese prostitute who's known as "The most popular girl in Hong Kong." As Lomax rents a hotel in the red-light Wan-Chai district, he begins to realize that this "respectable hotel" is nothing more than a front for prostitution.
Uh, ok. Suzie Wong may be a stereotypical character, but Nancy Kwan's ability to transform from a casual everyday woman by day, into an alluring seductress by night is something absolutely memorable.

Evergreen Suzie Wong still brings a smile to Hong Kong
In Mason's book, Suzie Wong is the demure and beautiful girl who, despite her well-to-do upbringing, is a prostitute to sailors and servicemen in the then British colony's once notorious Wan Chai red-light district.
Nowadays Suzie's old stomping ground Wan Chai is a busy entertainment and office district, but retains a sprinkling of girlie bars staffed mostly by prostitutes from the Philippines and Thailand.
Arguably, Suzie's appeal in the book is her refusal to see what she does as wrong, a component of her make-up that was excised from the film, which had Kwan instead play Wong as a knowing innocent; the frail victim of circumstance.
