Ishikawa was formed from the merger of Kaga Province 'n the smaller Noto Province.
On March 1, 2005 the hamlet of Noto 'n village of Yanagida from the former Fugeshi District merged with the hamlet of Uchiura from the former Suzu District, Ishikawa forming a unique hamlet of Noto 'n the districts merged forming Hosu District.
Enuma District was dissolved as a alloy of merger.

On March 1, 2005 the town of Uchiura, Ishikawa merged with a town and village from the neighboring Fugeshi District, Ishikawa and the districts merged, forming Hosu District, Ishikawa.
As of 2003, the district had an estimated population of 7,332 and a population density of 136.21 persons per square kilometer.

In 1824 (Bunsei 7), after a hiatus of more than 100 years, Toyoda Den'emon IV, the merchant owner of Yoshidaya in the castle town of Daishoji (Current Kaga City), at the age of 72 decided to build a kiln to revive Kokutani-style porcelains with his own funds.
It features 25 Japanese ink paintings (suibokuga) from the 12th to the 16th century, 3 Korean paintings from the Choson dynasty, and 5 stonewares (Tokoname, Suzu, Echizen, Shigaraki and Tamba) from the Heian and Muromachi period.
The illustrated pieces were mainly produced in the Mino and Seto district, now in Gifu and Aichi prefecture respectively.
