Those who come to Svaneti for the first time are deeply impressed by the sight of the proud snow-capped whitish-mauve peaks of Ushba, Shkhara, Tetnuld, Shkhelda, Aulama, and Shota Rustaveli rising to elevations of 4695, 5201, 4851, 4369, 4544 and 4960 meters respectively.

Svaneti is a geographical and historical region, settled by ancient Georgian tribes, in the North-West of Georgia, on the Southern slope of the main Caucasus range, in the mountainous region of the Enguri and Tskhenistkali rivers.
Accordingly, beyond the mountain range Svaneti boarders on Karachai Cherkezia and Kabardo Balkaria to the North, Racha in the East, Lechkhumi and Imereti to the South and Abkhazia and Samegrelo in the West.
Svaneti is rich in worship monuments of the pre-Christian epoch, in pagan praying houses - "Vitin", sacred hills, lakes, etc. There is a particularly great number of Christian churches and chapels, dating from the 10th to the 14th centuries.

During these festivities it is a lot easier to find transport in Svaneti, there are even direct busses from Tbilisi taking the family members that have emigrated to the capital back home for the yearly festivities (25 lari, better reserve in advance).
In the evening the local policemen gets terribly drunk and quite annoying, after 1.5 hour of hassling to get bribes from me they finally let me go after I started showing photos of my family at home which led to them having to toast on the family and suddenly were my friends.

However, at the regional level, the World Food Programme office in Kutaisi is maintaining contact with the Regional Governors of Imereti and Kvemo Svaneti - both these areas are amongst the worst affected and closely monitoring the situation.
