 SveaSoft - Seattle Wireless
Sveasoft is a Stockton, California based software company that develops modified distributions of 802.11g wireless router firmware for Linksys models WRT54G and WRT54GS home routers.
Sveasoft firmware is typically advertised as being able to increase the router's radio transmission power from 28 milliwatts to 251 milliwatts, as well as being able to use 14 channels for 802.11b transmissions instead of the 11 normally permitted in the U.S., or 13 permitted elsewhere.
This is the latest Sveasoft firmware release, which Sveasoft distributes solely to developers and subscribers.

Sveasoft have produced a new firmware for a Linksys wireless router.
However, Sveasoft themselves will only give you a copy of "pre-release" version of their software if you pay to "subscribe" to this service.
Sveasoft will give you their pre-release software for free and allow you to distribute it, but if you do, you can't get support or buy future versions of the pre-release software.

jkOnTheRun: Third party wireless access point firmware
Sveasoft is the brainchild of James Ewing who is located offshore Sweden and has a set of firmware that not only corrects problems in Linksys (and other) APs but also adds a lot of new features.
Sveasoft's firmware is written for any AP or router that uses the Broadcom chipset including many of those produced by Linksys and some from other manufacturers.
There has been some controversy in recent months about whether or not Sveasoft is in violaton of the GPL under which the original firmware knockoff was released but Sveasoft distributes the source code with their updates so this should not be an issue.

Sveasoft, the little router firmware company on an island off the coast of Sweden that I have written about before, switched this week to requiring paid subscription access to its support forums and to download beta versions of its firmware releases for running Linux on various WiFi routers.
A Sveasoft subscription costs $20 per year, which gives you access to the support forums, e-mail support, and the right to download the latest beta versions including source.
Most of the people complaining about Sveasoft can easily afford the $20 subscription or the $50 forking fee but they are just annoyed that any money is involved.

Yes, you are right, I should really replace that few lines of source code because of the dubious origin (Samadhi_v2_2.00.8.5sv_src.zip didn't indicate any copyrights on the file rc/mkfiles.c, but it seems to be extracted from the Zebra source code).
Sveasoft has really taking the whole idea of GPL software to a new low as of late.
And then there is Sveasoft's thinly vailed attempt to take their firmware commercial with source code and source sharing restrictions for those not willing to pay $20 for their 'support'.

If Sveasoft really is embedding unique ID's in firmware and phoning home, not only does this violate the spirit of free software, it also must be clearly stated in a privacy policy.
With respect to Sveasoft's business decision to place conditions on a subscription, and then enforce those conditions when they are broken, that is completely separate from the GPL (it's a contract law issue, not a copyright law issue).
Sveasoft didn't forbit that but stated that your subscription would be canceled if you redistribute.

I would like to comment on their nonsense: Sveasoft's Firmware is under GPL, this means it is totally okay to distribute it and to download a distributed copy.

Digg - Sveasoft violates the GPL
Sveasoft think this is OK because they've only released it to a few people - however the GPL says source code must always be given, no matter how small the distribution.
Sveasoft's continual misrepresentations and factual omissions are merely a continuation of their attempts to create the impression that there is room for argument where there is none.
The matter is that in practice, Sveasoft is charging a fee for distribution of the binaries (that would be legal), but is not giving away the current source code along with it.

 Sveasoft's vs WiFi-Box - dslreports.com
It's pretty simple: Sveasoft's firmware is targeted more for the WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) and Public Access Point crowd; those that want to use the relatively inexpensive WRT54G from Linksys to provide free or fee-based internet access.
Sveasoft's firmware is based on the LinkSys GPL source code distribution and distributed freely under the GNU General Public License; you can download the source code, make changes to it, recompile it yourself and install your own version on your WRT54G if you'd like.
However, Sveasoft has completely complied with the GNU General Public License, and the complete source code is publicly available for review, modification, and redistribution.
