However, when his sister Karin (Pernilla August) auctions the family farm so she can join Brother Hellgum (Sven-Bertil Taube) on his journey to the Holy Land, Ingmar decides to forsake Gertrud and marry a rich farmer's daughter to keep the farm in the family.
August spends close to two hours in the wintry Swedish countryside, where cold blues, greys and muted light dominate the screen.
One reason for his cross-Nordic success may be that he's married to the wonderful Swedish actor Pernilla August, who he casts in his Swedish films, but mostly it has to do with the material he adapts -- tightly wound stories boasting a touch of naked emotionalism.

 Review: Jerusalem
Give credit to Pernilla August (the director's wife, who previously appeared in his The Best Intentions), Ulf Friberg, Sven-Bertil Taube, and especially Maria Bonnevie, whose tortured portrayal of Gertrud is one of Jerusalem's strengths.
August is careful to remain non- judgmental in his approach to the subject, and this results in a balanced, cliché-free exploration of how fringe sects are born and why apparently well-adjusted men and women join them.
August uses his canvas to explore not only issues of faith and spirituality, but more human matters, such as betrayal, lust, and longing.
