Svengali - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Svengali is the name of a fictional hypnotist in George du Maurier's 1894 novel, Trilby.
Svengali transforms Trilby into a great singer using hypnosis, but she cannot perform without his help in entering a trance state.
The relation between Svengali and Trilby forms only a small portion of the novel, which is mainly an evocation of Bohemian Paris in the 1850s.

Through his powerful talent for hypnosis, Svengali is able to bring Trilby under his spell, taking her away from her family and the heartbroken Billee.
Svengali and Trilby travel throughout Europe from one concert to the next, thrilling audiences with her magnificent talent.
After that chance meeting, Svengali systematically ruins Trilby's career, canceling concerts and moving from place to place, in an effort to avoid her reuniting with the persistent Billee.

Disciplining the Diva: Teaching Trilby to Sing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Svengali's hypnotizing Trilby leads directly to her death at the end of the novel; however, his hypnosis is also productive, as it produces a voice the world more beautiful than the world has seen before.
Svengali's ocular instrument may very well be a laryngoscope in the du Maurier drawing, or it may not be; regardless, he is using a contraption designed to peer into the back of Trilby's throat and, based on his knowledge as singing teacher and medical man, he determines that she can sing.
Svengali must be read as being a medical man, as well as a teacher of singing, rather than being read as being homosexual, as Doty does, or exclusively as threatening Jew, as much of the rest of the extant criticism does.

SVENGALI has its share of little scratches and marks on occasion, but the original materials are still in remarkable condition and the image remains smooth and clear throughout.

At no point is Svengali ever identified specifically as being Jewish, but his appearance, accent, and initial behavior are all unmistakably drawn from the era’s most negative stereotypes about Jews, and with a less nuanced performance than the one Barrymore provides, the characterization would be exceedingly distasteful.
Svengali is able to link his mind with Trilby’s even from all the way across the city, and when he takes control of her, it is a matter of his will crushing and subsuming hers by brute mental force.
