In deriving the relationship, Sverdrup assumed that the flow is stationary, that lateral friction and molecular viscosity are small, and that turbulence near the sea surface can be described using an eddy viscosity.
Sverdrup assumed: i) The internal flow in the ocean is geostrophic; ii) there is a uniform depth of no motion; and iii) Ekman's transport is correct.
Sverdrup's relationship is so central to theories of the ocean circulation that almost all discussions assume it to be valid without any comment at all and proceed to calculate its consequences for higher-order dynamics...

Under Sverdrup, SIO was transformed into a modern oceanographic institution, initially concentrating on study of the California Current and the Gulf of California.
Inspired during his SIO years to unite oceanic physics and biology, Sverdrup quantified the concept of "critical depth" (formulated earlier by the Norwegian H. Gran and the American G. Riley) in 1953, explaining the onset of the spring phytoplankton bloom in newly stratified water columns.

During an 1898-1902 Arctic expedition, Norwegian explorer Otto Sverdrup discovered three islands in what is now the Canadian territory of Nunavut.
Having a Norwegian announce the discovery of new lands in Canada's ice-bound north was an embarrassment - Sverdrup was even pushing his own government to send patrols over to police the islands to demonstrate that they were "Norwegian".
This was a complication that Canada did not want, so Sverdrup was paid $67,000, supposedly for his original maps and journals.
