Pursuant to Chapter 3, Article 3 of the Riksbank Act, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the General Council are entitled to be present at meetings of the Executive Board with the right to speak, but without the right to make proposals or to vote.
According to the Riksbank Act, the Riksbank is entitled, in its capacity as central bank, to pursue operations through subsidiaries.
Pursuant to Chapter 4, Article 1 of the Riksbank Act, the General Council and the Executive Board shall consult one another before a proposal is made to the Riksdag or the Government.

It was instituted by the Bank of Sweden (Sveriges Riksbank) at its 300th anniversary in 1969.
The prize is, like the prizes in Chemistry and Physics, decided by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and is awarded alongside the other prizes in the sciences.
