  New union elects new president
In an individual and public vote of 112 MPs, Marovic was elected by a margin of 18, with 65 voting in favor of his election, 46 of whom were Serbian MPs and 19 Montenegrin; and 47 voting in opposition, 34 of whom were Serbian and 13 Montenegrin.
Marovic’s pledge read: "I swear I will carry out the duty of the president of state union of Serbia and Montenegro in accordance with the state union's Constitutional Charter, conscientiously and honorably,".
Marovic was born in Kotor in 1955 and graduated from Podgroica’s Law School.

 AEGiS-AP: Serbia-Montenegro Pres:Hope For Bulgarian Nurses In Libya
President Svetozar Marovic and former Yugoslav President Zoran Lilic have been mediating in negotiations between Bulgaria and Libya in an attempt to win a review of the sentences of the five, who along with a Palestinian doctor have been convicted of deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with the AIDS virus.
Marovic gave no details about the possible deal but said "it was received well and with understanding by our Libyan friends." He said it must now be reviewed by Bulgarian leaders.
Bulgarian authorities had asked Marovic and Lilic - who are known to have good ties with the Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi - to mediate in the case, which has drawn international condemnation of Libya.

Montenegrin lawyer Svetozar Marovic was elected the first president of the new union of Serbia-Montenegro on 7 March 2003, less than a month after the former Yugoslav federation was abolished.
Marovic assumed his post at a time when both Serbia and Montenegro were without elected presidents and less than a week before a state of emergency was imposed in Serbia following the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic on 12 March.
Marovic was born on 31 March 1955 in the town of Kotor.

Marovic is due to name the five members of the future council within the next five days.

Svetozar Marovic issued the apology - the first by a Belgrade official - during a visit to the Bosnian capital.
Two months ago, Mr Marovic - a Montenegrin - and his Croatian counterpart both apologised for the actions of their citizens in the 1991-95 war between the two countries.
Mr Marovic repeatedly sought to draw a distinction between the actions of Serbia and Montenegro - previously known as Yugoslavia - as a state, and individuals, however high positions those individuals may have occupied.

President of Serbia and Montenegro (SCG) Svetozar Marovic stated yesterday in Istanbul that the invitation of SCG to attend the NATO summit was the sign of the definite readiness of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and leading member states to make SCG a full part of the Euro-Atlantic integration processes.
Tanjug News Agency reports that Marovic said that this was a recognition to SCG on its activities so far, in many areas related to the security of peace and preserving of stability in the region and for many steps we have taken in the field of army reform.
It is expected that SCG President Marovic will be speaking at the Euro-Atlantic Council for partnership assembly, where he would inform the representatives of all NATO members and partner countries on further steps that the state union would take in order to join the Euro-Atlantic structures.

In a New Year Address to the Nation, Marovic said the country badly needs the widest possible national consensus that all the political diversities, which exist in every democratic society, must not be an obstacle to the state union's stepped up accession to the European Union (EU).
PODGORICA, Dec 31 (Tanjug) - Serbia-Montenegro President Svetozar Marovic said on Wednesday that the victory of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) at the Serbian early parliamentary elections did not mean that the state union of Serbia-Montenegro would cease to exist.
In an interview to the Podgorica daily Dan, Marovic said that even before the elections in Serbia, his view had been opposed to those who believed that the Radicals' victory would mark the final end of the state union.

Prague, 10 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Stipe Mesic and Svetozar Marovic, the presidents of Croatia and Serbia-Montenegro, today offered a joint apology for what Marovic called "all the evils" committed by their countries during the bloody 1991-95 breakup of Yugoslavia, in which tens of thousands of people died.
It was Marovic who initiated the surprise apology in his statement: "I want to apologize for all the evils that any citizen of Serbia and Montenegro inflicted upon or committed against any citizen of Croatia."
Marovic today said during his news conference with Mesic that "in the name of the past which cannot be forgotten," Belgrade and Zagreb "must work together so anyone who is individually guilty will face the law," a reference likely to signal Belgrade's openness to improved cooperation not only with the ICTY, but also with Zagreb.

In an interview with French daily Le Figaro, Marovic said the "main problem" was the Albanian desire to regain the territory of Kosovo, a southern Serbian province administered by the United Nations since 1999.
Marovic, who is to meet here Wednesday with his French counterpart Jacques Chirac, expects France's support for Serbia and Montenegro's bid to join the European Union.
