	Svitavy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Svitavy (German: Zwittau) is both a city and a district in the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic.
		From 1256 Svitavy was owned by bishops from Olomouc.
		The city has been destroyed twice, during the Thirty Years War the city was devastated and in 1781 it was burned down by accident.

		Therefore the population of Svitavy became dominantly German, in contrast to that of Old Svitavy.

		Though the exact way Svitavy received its name is the subject of differing myths, one of the more credible has it receiving the name after the small Svitava River, whose water was once so crystal clear that the early Slavs equated it with an effect described by the word "svitati", or being clean and pure.
		The earliest written record of the city of Svitavy can be found in the year 1256 in a letter resolving a land dispute between Bruno of Schauemburk, the Bishop of Olomouc, and the Premonstratensian monastery in Litomysl, which places it among the older towns in the country.

		The Town Museum and Gallery is housed in a villa originally owned by Johann Budig, the Mayor of Svitavy from 1879-1902.
		Part of the museum collections was returned to Svitavy, but only a fragment of Ottendorfer´s library, once the largest German library in the Czech Lands, was rescued.
