Wipe tests, which some institutions may perform internally, are fine for determining health hazard levels of radioisotope contamination, but the level of contamination for scientists attempting to measure environmental levels of radioisotopes is at least 1000 times lower than health contamination levels.
A SWAB test is needed to detect this lower level of contamination.

Swab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In medicine, a swab is a small piece of material, such as gauze or cotton, which is used to clean wounds, apply medications, or retrieve samples of body fluids such as blood or mucus.

Cotton swab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are swabbed onto or into the infected area, then wiped across the culture medium, such as an agar plate, where any bacteria from the swab will grow.
Breaking one marked end of the swab breaks an air seal, allowing the medicine to saturate the cotton at the other end so that it can be directly applied with the swab (the cotton on the broken end is apparently there for the user's comfort when breaking the end).
Cotton swabs are sometimes used to clean the inside of ears, although this usage is not recommended because it could cause infection.

CDC - Swab Materials and Bacillus anthracis Spore Recovery from Nonporous Surfaces
Effects of swab preparation and processing protocol (combined as recovery method) and swab materials and their interactions were analyzed with general linear model procedure for analysis of variance of unbalanced data.
When swabs were inoculated directly with the spore suspension, then processed with vortexing, all swab materials tested released significantly higher percentages of spores than were recovered by swabs that sampled spores from the stainless steel surfaces (Table 1).
Swabbing environmental surfaces may not be the most efficient means of recovering bacterial contamination if quantitation (i.e., estimate of magnitude) is the objective of the sampling; however, in some situations a swab sample may be the best available sampling method.

 #2 - Preparing a CCD/CMOS Swab photo - Nicholas R. photos at pbase.com
Sensor swabbing is the cleaning method of choice for thousands of digi-photogs because we're not interested in going from 20 specks down to 12; we're VERY interested in going from 20 down to ZERO.
The main thrust of this tutorial is that sensor swabbing requires you to wrap a well designed swab with a PecPad, put a drop of methanol on it and wipe a small surface that is similar to glass.
If you continue researching the materials used in sensor swabbing, you'll probably encounter the manufacturer's web-site where it is stated: "PecPads are not recommended for sensor cleaning, but (pre-made) SensorSwabs are." The reason behind this is that Kodak sponsored the development and approved the "clean room" assembly of the SensorSwabs.
