Between the Swiss and the Franconian Jura, the Swabian Jura (Alb) is the central part of a Jura chain stretching right through central Europe.
Many of these cultural treasures are to be found on the Swabian Alb, mankind’s oldest artworks (30,000 years old), the world’s highest church steeple (Ulm Cathedral), remains of the Limes, the German frontier wall, Celtic centres of cult worship, churches from every epoch, and towns that have developed over the centuries with their surviving traditions.
The Swabian Alb has one of the highest concentrations of castles in Germany and, not least, famous people such as Hölderlin, Uhland, Einstein, Daimler and Hauff were born here, to name but a few.

The main physical features of Swabia are the Black Forest; the valley of the upper Danube River, which rises there; the Swabian Jura, a mountain range that extends parallel to and N of the Danube; and the valley of the upper Neckar River.
The rest of Swabia was held in large part by the counts (later dukes) of Württemberg, by the margraves of Baden-Durlach, by the landgraves of Fürstenberg, by the princes of Hohenzollern, by the bishops of Strasbourg, Konstanz (Constance), and Augsburg, by several powerful abbeys, and by a multitude of petty princes, counts, and knights.
The Swabian League of 1376–89 successfully opposed Emperor Charles IV but was eventually defeated by the count of Württemberg.

Swabian (Schwäbisch), a dialect of High German spoken in the South-West, mostly in the Land of Baden-Württemberg, both in the capital Stuttgart and in the rural area known as the Swabian Jura, and in southwestern Bavaria.
The dialect ranges from a 'standard' Swabian, spoken in Stuttgart, to slightly differing and 'thicker' forms found in smaller towns in the countryside.
True Swabian, with its nasal intonations and grammatical adjustments to common words (German 'haus' becomes Swabian 'haeusle'), is known for being difficult for speakers of Standard German to understand.

The find at Hohle Fels cave in the Swabian Jura, southwestern Germany, have been carbon-dated to at least 30 000 years old, placing them in the era when anatomically modern man and the strange hominids known as Neanderthals lived alongside each other.
None longer than five centimetres across, the carvings comprise a duck-like bird; an animal that resembles a horse; and a half-human, half-animal creature that appears to have the body of a man and possibly the face of a lion.
The collection of 20 Swabian Jura carvings is "the oldest body of figurative art in the world," said British archaelogist Anthony Sinclair, whose commentary in the London-based science journal Nature is published on Thursday alongside Conard's research.
