  The Hindu : Entertainment : Will `Swades' repeat the `Lagaan' magic ?
For Ashutosh, "Swades" is a sort of litmus test, as this time expectations are high and moreover it is his first film without Aamir Khan, his onetime favourite.
The USP of "Swades" is undoubtedly King Khan for whom the film is sort of a benchmark as he has to prove that he can churn out a blockbuster without the backing of the Chopras and Johars.
The concept of "Swades" is that we are surrounded by issues, mainly social which we take for granted as though they are somebody else's problem.

Swades touches upon much that is wrong with an India seeking its place on the global stage even as it sets the deep-rooted problems against the affluence of a NASA project manager, a lovably nerdy Mohan Bhargava (Shahrukh Khan).
The emotions that Swades maps are raw, tangible, and delectably free of mass- appeal manipulation.
The film eschews theatrics except when Mohan, in a Lagaan-like situation, helps the villagers generate their own electricity and light a bulb that illuminates another of the many authentic faces that Gowariker puts on screen - a half-blind woman whose furrowed visage stretches into a smile as the darkness is dispelled.

A song in a movie is supposed to condense an emotional state or a transtion in protagonist's mind that would have been too ungainly (and probably too long) to compose with mere dialogs.

Like the strings of the sitar that shapes the actions of (movie) Gandhi, it is the turn of shehnai, this time, to infuse the sense of responsibility and belonging, and with A.R.Rahman weilding the baton, the result turns out to be earthy, rustic, rich and immensely satisfying all at the same time.

While subtle, Swades is rather remarkable for introducing vivid rather than stereotypical characters who represent the caste dynamic that organizes the village: Shrivastava’s status as an amiable but forward-looking Kayastha, for instance, positions him as a crucial intermediary in the film’s unfolding exploration of social divisions and alliances.
Swades might be understood as a new variation on this pattern: unlike previous films such as Pardes that (as Jigna Desai notes) often oppose a “good NRI” and “bad NRI,” Swades avoids such easy dichotomies, or perhaps internalizes them insofar as Mohan inhabits both roles, but without typical exaggeration in either position.
Swades evokes the live folk performances that preceded the teleserial and in effect re-stages one in the serial’s influential wake.) The undisguised fact that the “real” reincarnation of Ram is located in the body of the globalized NRI summarizes the film’s simultaneous invocation of and often daring revision of tradition.

Bollywood - Music Review - Swades
The music for Swades, much like Lagaan, is like listening to a drama play enfold track after track and the soul, thankfully, is all worth listening to.
For once, and as rarely as it may happen in Bollywood, the music was composed without thinking of a genre of listeners, a stereotype (the masses or the classes), but simply of composing meaningful, soulful music.
Swades is soulful in that dual aspect of the musical composition and what it represents holding that golden token of appealing to everyone.
