Kriyananda is the founder of Ananda, a group of spiritual intentional communities, meditation centers and study groups, based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, as understood by Kriyananda.
Kriyananda was born in Romania into an American family.
In 1996, Swami Kriyananda was invited to live at the Ananda Italy center, and began to spend most of the year there, helping to spread Yogananda's teachings globally.

They do not recognize Kriyananda as a legitimate preacher of Yogananda's teachings and have actually taken Ananada to court saying that, by using Yogananda's books, etc. to teach, they are effectively ignoring the copyright rules the SRF holds on the materials.

February 5, a jury in San Mateo County, California, had to decide whether Swami Kriyananda and a minister of the Ananda Church of Self Realization were guilty of fraud and inflicting emotional distress on a former female member.
But they pointed out that in contrast to "fraudulently passing himself off as a swami when he was not adhering to his vows," as charged by Bertolucci's lawyer Michael Flynn, Kriyananda had publicly renounced his vows of celibacy when he married in 1985.
Kriyananda has since relinquished his position as the church's spiritual director and his place on Ananda's board.

Swami had often spoken of the need for Ananda someday to take Master’s message back to India, and to continue the work he himself had been doing there before he was summoned back to America and subsequently thrown out of Self-Realization fellowship back in 1962.
In the last two weeks Swami gave a talk for a standing room only crowd of 700 in New Delhi and has begun taping the half-hour TV shows that will be shown daily for a month on India’s “Sadhana Channel” (imagine having that here!).
