Swami Lakshman Joo was born on 9th May, 1907 (Vaisakha Krishna Dwadasi), Thursday, at 4 p.m., in Srinagar, Kashmir.
Lakshman Ji's childhood was spent under the spiritual care of this great sage, Swami Ram who taught him the Japa of Gayatri Mantra and also certain Yogic exercises according to the Saiva discipline.
Again, it was Lakshman Joo who went to see her, gave her a grape to eat, and then she started improving and in due course, she regained her normal condition.

Swami ji, at certain occasions gave series of lectures on spiritual topics for the elevation of common people, besides taking special classes and guiding scholars in their research work.
Swami Lakshmana Joo read his paper in Sanskrit on 'Kundalini Vijnana Rahasyam' at the All India Tantra Sammelanam held under the auspices of the Varanaseya Sanskrit University at Varanasi in the year 1965.
Swami Ramdas (a jivanmukta) of Kanhangarh, Mangalore, Swami Satyananda Saraswati of Munger, and Swami Muktananda of Ganeshpuri were pleased to meet the Swami when they visited Srinagar.

For many years I could not meet Swami Ji as and when I visited Kashmir he was away or when he was there I could not come.
Swami Ji used to give audience only on Sundays and it was a Wednesday.
I really did not know why Swami Ji was asking me to go to Thiruvannamalai till I learnt that he had stayed with Ramana for quite some time and Ramana Maharishi was one of the great masters he learnt from.

Ishwar Swaroop Swami Lakshmanjoo Maharaj (1907-1991) was a famed mystic, scholar, and fully-realized saint in the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism.
Swami Lakshmanjoo's parents, Pundit Narayan Das Raina (father) and Srimati Arnyamali (mother) were ardent devotees of their family priest and guru, Swami Ram.
As soon as Swami Ram heard news of the birth, he became ecstatic and approached Swamiji's parents, proclaiming, "I am Ram; let the child be called Lakshman" in reference to brothers Ram and Lakshman.

Now a commentary on the latter one in English from a contemporary master (acharya) of Kashmir Shaivism, Swami Lakshman Joo (1907-91), has also been published.
The first English translation by Jaideva Singh was published in 1979, while a German translation by Bettina Bäumer came out in 2003.
All three authors have been disciples of Swami Lakshman Joo, up to now the last Kashmiri Shaiva master, and their translations and interpretations are based on his teaching.

The line of its masters tradition was alive until recently, when the last known master Swami Lakshman Joo passed.
It seems like the lineage has been broken.
Lakshman Joo in his introduction to Shaivism points out clearly that it has to be regarded as a philosophy and not as a religion.
