The Swamp Sparrow lives in marshes and other wetlands including swamps, bogs, wet meadows, and the brushy edges of streams and ponds.
Swamp Sparrows begin singing very early in the day and will sometimes sing through the night, especially when there is moonlight.
The sparrow's back is light brown, streaked with darker brown and its wings show a noticeable rufous shoulder patch in all plumages.

I contacted Greg Zell, Long Branch Nature Center Director, concerning the draining of Sparrow Swamp which is at the edge of Barcroft and Arlington Forest along the Four Mile Run bike path.
Apparently three different engineering studies all concluded that water migration from the swamp through the bike path was leaching soil, potentially causing structural damage to the bike path.
I personally am interested in helping to reestablish Sparrow Swamp and plan to present a resolution at the BSCL May meeting aimed at sending a letter to Jim Hunter in support of providing the funds.

Yeah i have that book to by Rising, Sparrows of United States and Canada, can't nail the ID, maybe just because the picture is crappy but usually can id from facial markings...
Swamp Sparrow but that could be a twig.
The indistinct smudge of dark on the breast, white throat, darkish crown (with distinct median stripe) and hint of dark (reddish?) primaries IMHO indicate that this bird is a Swamp Sparrow.

The Chipping Sparrow has similar marks, but the Swamp Sparrow is more robust and lacks the fl line through the eye and white one above that the Chipping Sparrow displays; furthermore, the habitats of these two birds are very different.
When in juvenile plumage, it is readily mistaken for Lincoln's Sparrow.
It may be that all or most wintering Swamp Sparrows belong to this second subspecies; the two races are indistinguishable in life.

This appears to be a first winter bird, in particular based on the brownish ear-coverts (which were noticeable to me in the field, if not in these photos) and the tan face.
Winter adult's ear-coverts may also show a slight "brown tinge," but with a grayish face, not tan / buff.
This sparrow was first spotted at the the same location on Nov. 13, 2004 by Art Edwards and George Bing.

Lincoln's sparrow #46280 was banded May 4 in 2004 and subsequently recaptured 5x.

It was quite active, foraging all of the way from the top of the trees along the southern edge of the pen to feeding from the ground as a sparrow might underneath the pine along the eastern edge of the pen.
Earlier, I had the SWAMP SPARROW at the southeastern edge of Middle Lake, foraging in the dense brush in that area.
Song Sparrow would show a prominent submoustachial and Lincoln's Sparrow should show a buffy submoustachial stripe, upper breast and fine dark streaking on the upper breast.

Early on, the swamp was enveloped in a low fog and the temperatures were chilly but not freezing.
I stumbled upon a window-killed SWAMP SPARROW on the cement.
Sparrow numbers were high with Savannah and Swamp being particularly abundant.
