Swampman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suppose Davidson goes hiking in the swamp and is struck and killed by a lightning bolt.
At the same time, nearby in the swamp another lightning bolt spontaneously rearranges a bunch of molecules such that, entirely by coincidence, they take on exactly the same form that Davidson's body had at the moment of his untimely death.
Therefore, any theory of language which leads one to conclude that swamp man's utterances and, particularly, thoughts, are any different from Davidson's is necessarily flawed.

Reel Comics #12: A Man Thing - The Hollywood News
The swamp was once a place filled with life and beauty, but evil men with their "drills, their pipes, greed, and murder," have awaken a vengeful spirit.
Swamp Thing (DC Comics) and Man-Thing (Marvel Comics) are characters that appeared in 1971, both were biochemists, both were murdered in the swamp, and both were then transformed into shambling half-man half-vegetable muck monsters through a combination of science and magic.
Unlike Swamp Thing, whose original goofy premise was turned into a series of excellent stories and though provoking comics by Alan Moore (V for Vendetta), and who has inspired two live-action movies as well a cartoon series, Man-Thing has made little impact on popular culture and has been written into few really interesting stories.

Alan Moore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Woodrue, who was also the villain Floronic Man, soon concludes that Swamp Thing is a superficial imitation of a man, his lungs cannot pump air, his brain does not contain neurons.
He concludes that the swamp creature is a plant which had absorbed the memories and imitated the life of a dead man; Swamp Thing was never human.
DC followed Swamp Thing's success by recruiting British writers like Grant Morrison, Jamie Delano, Peter Milligan and Neil Gaiman to write comics in a similar vein, often involving radical revamps of obscure characters, and thus laid the foundation of what became the Vertigo line.

Dead-man's Swamp is a particularly inhospitable tract of real estate, originally 12 miles X 18 miles, in the heart of central Northern Michigan.
It has historically been singularly resistant to the seemingly inexorable inroads of man, and, in fact, has exacted a high price from many who were willing to test their mettle against its harsh realities.

Gerber expanded on the notion of the swamp having mystical properties and made it the "nexus of all realities", thus supplying numerous demons, ghosts, time-travelling warriors, etc., to serve as the Man-Thing's antagonists—though he continued to encounter non-supernatural villains as well, including land developers, fascist vigilantes, and common criminals.

Understand, I have no fondness for the whole "swamp monster" phenomenon, to the point that I'm not even a huge fan of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, which is generally recognized as some of the best work in the medium.
I'm still not a big swamp monster fan, and I don't know if this series will hold my interest, but this is a pretty good start, a good horror comic in a field that has trouble producing in that genre.
I don't want to be labelled as one of those continuity obsessives, but I should point out that part of the strength of this miniseries is that it is clearly not set in the Marvel Universe, and maybe Marvel needs to consider making an imprint that is specifically and always out-of-continuity for tales like these.

We were a little upset at some Network notes we had gotten (I forgot what they were) and we started commenting on what they thought they wanted to see in Swamp Thing and what we could really afford to do without sacrificing our characters.

In this case, the human is Ted Sallis, a research biochemist on the run from AIM, a Marvel Universe subversive organization.
