Swan Records was founded in 1957 in Philadelphia, and lasted until about 1967, when they were still known to have been reissuing 45s.
Their second record (Swan 4006) paired the silly "Nee Nee Na Na Na Nu Nu" with the strange "Flip Top Box," and this record alone would have been enough to kill off any thoughts the public may have been harboring that this was a serious group.
Shortly after this record was released, Swan changed the colors of their label to fl with silver print for both the 45s and the LPs.

It was in the Summer of 1921 that Ethel Waters came to the rescue of Black Swan Records.
It was ironic that at the time of its earliest success Black Swan had the opportunity to record and sign Bessie Smith, who would later become legendary as the "Queen of the Blues." Harry Pace upon hearing her sing one night decided that she was too "nitty gritty" for his taste.
An orchestra, the Black Swan Jazz Masters was organized to accompany Ethel Waters on this national tour.

Black Swan Records was a recording company based in Harlem, New York in operation from 1921 to 1923.
Although issuing recordings in a number of genres, including jazz, opera and symphonic works, Black Swan was primarily engaged in the recording of blues music.
Vincent’s study of record label advertising in the so-called “fl press” between 1921-23 concludes that by 1923, the success of Black Swan Records inspired such white-owned record labels as Victor, Paramount, and Okeh to place record advertisements in the “fl press.”1 The record companies were hoping to appeal to a newly formed African-American consumer class.

Swan was also given the rights to the German version of "She Loves You", "Sie Liebt Dich" which peaked at #97 in 1964.
The success of the "She Loves You" single kept Swan going while other small record labels were snowed under by the British invasion, but it finally closed its doors in 1967.

The rumour mill has been working overtime with folks in the jazz community (and the record community) speculating on "what's going on with Black Swan Records" so I thought I'd put this note together to set the record straight.
I don't think it's any secret that Black Swan Records has been struggling for a long time; in the eight years since the store moved to West Broadway from our second location on West 4th, the recording industry has undergone massive upheavals and nowhere has the competition been fiercer than in Vancouver.
Combined with a general economic downturn in BC and a weak Canadian dollar, even the prospect of imports has proved to be too pricey to keep a reasonable (unsubsidized) trade going.

The Black Swan Phonograph Corporation was probably named for a 19th century African-American concert singer, Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield (1809-1976) who toured America and Europe billed as "The Black Swan".
At one point, Black Swan was issuing up to 10 recordings a month with prices of 75 cents for popular tunes and one dollar for their Classic Red Label series.
This series included recordings by Antoinette Gaines, billed as "The First Grand Opera Record Ever Made by a Colored Singer." There was a great deal of competition in the 1920s recording market, and in 1924 Black Swan merged with the Paramount Company, although they continued to issue the Black Swan Catalog.
