Located 2.4km from Flinders Street Station, Melbourne's central railway station, Richmond station is located close to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Melbourne Park, so is often busy during sporting and other special events.
Melbourne is to host the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Richmond station is the gateway to the main venues.

Nearby is an old eucalypt tree which shows a big scar caused by harvesting of bark for a canoe by the original inhabitants of the Yarra River Valley, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.
Eighty One hectares of parkland were originally established in 1856 by Governor Charles La Trobe that extended from Punt Road to Swanston Street and from Wellington Parade to the Yarra River.
By the 1860s five recreational ovals were marked out: the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Richmond Cricket Ground, East Melbourne Cricket Club ovals (two), and an oval in Gosch's Paddock, south of Swan Street.

East Melbourne's building stock was enlarged during the 1990s when the Yarra Park school and adjoining land was used for apartments, and when the railways yards west of Jolimont were reduced.

 Melbourne Cable Trams
Melbourne was formerly served by one of the most extensive cable tram systems outside of the United States of America.
Electric trams made their debut in 1906 and were mostly constructed to connect with the outer ends of the cable tram network, though some, such as the Hawthorn Tramways Trust line along Swan Street, were constructed into the City.
He was a keen and skilled photographer who photographed a wide range of subjects, and won a prize from a Melbourne newspaper for one of his pictures.
