The ancient parish and village of Swanley have now been overtaken by the town, about a mile to the south, which began life as three houses before the advent of the railway in 1861.
Swanley was renowned as a horticultural centre and became known as the "Home of Flowers" a designation recently revived by its Town Council in connection with a major initiative to beautify the town with flowers.
Swanley was historically a health "resort" and housed an important care home for sufferers of tuberculosis.

Swanley grew from a crossroads with virtually no buildings, to a considerable town with a population of 20,986 (2001) in one and a half centuries.
Swanley Home for Little Boys was opened in 1883 for orphans from London, a place in the country where they learned a trade to secure a living in later life.
Swanley was originally seen as developing into a genteel Victorian residential area with the building of several villas along London Road and Birchwood Park Avenue, these included private schools for middle class Victorian families.

The S.S. Swanley is a big freighter of 4,640 gross tons, net 2,907, she is 300 feet long, her breath is 51 feet.

A town council is due to decide whether to spend £185,000 on buying a car park 50 miles away in a different county.
Swanley Town Council, in Kent, is considering the purchase of an undeveloped site in Eastbourne, on the East Sussex coast.
Brian Daley, chief executive of Swanley Town Council, said buying the plot, which is only yards from the hotel, could prove an investment for the town.

The search revealed a few Talletts, I started to look through their details and on the last one, William Tallett my jaw dropped.There was this Tallett who lived and enlisted in Swanley Kent, where my family settled to after leaving Sussex, but he was Born in Brighton, the same place as my Great Grandad.
Corporal Tullett was for 5 years before the war in the Swanley District terratorials and was in camp when the mobilisation took place in August 1914.

A league record of 303 (with 210 in the men's league race and 86 in the women's) finished the course at Swanley Park on a raw day with intermittent drizzle.
The three women who turned out, Carol Reid, Fayne Stone and Dianne August all worked hard and their efforts were probably worth a couple of places in the combined league since, in coming 7th on the day we were only two position points ahead of Swanley.
The women came 9th on the day in their league, just edging out Gravesend on countback.
